To accelerate adoption of open source Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Dell today announced the availability of the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution offering – an open source, on-premise cloud solution based on the OpenStack platform, running on Ubuntu—to select regions in Europe and Asia. Customers in these geographies seeking alternatives to existing cloud options based on proprietary, licensed software models can now utilize the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution, which integrates the OpenStack cloud operating system, cloud-optimized Dell PowerEdge C servers, the Dell-developed Crowbar deployment and management software framework, and award-winning services from Dell. John Igoe, Executive Director of Cloud and Big Data Solutions for Dell, will be presenting at World Hosting Days today and sharing further details on the company’s news.
The Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution comes with an OpenStack-optimized reference architecture designed to help customers quickly integrate, deploy and manage their IT resources in an open source cloud environment. Tested, validated, and supported by Dell, the reference architecture is based on Dell PowerEdge C Series servers—comprised of the C6100, C6105, C2100 and, in the coming weeks, Dell’s new C6220 and R720 —which capture the efficiencies and design lessons learned from some of the world’s largest hosting and cloud providers, while being engineered to maximize revenue per-square foot within the data center.
This solution also incorporates Dell’s popular Crowbar software framework, which manages the OpenStack deployment from the initial server boot to the configuration of the primary OpenStack components, allowing users to complete bare metal deployment of multi-node OpenStack clouds in hours, as opposed to days. Once the initial deployment is complete, Crowbar can be used to maintain, expand, and architect the complete solution, including BIOS configuration, network discovery, status monitoring, performance data gathering, and alerting. Crowbar is an open source software project (Apache 2.0 license) with a thriving community behind it where users, customers, and partners leverage Crowbar’s modular design to build in their own capabilities. Additionally, those customers who purchase the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution receive training, deployment, and support on the Dell Crowbar software.
Dell has been part of the OpenStack community since its creation, and the expertise in servers, software, and services is the underpinning of the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution.
“As early supporters of solutions based on open-standards like OpenStack and Hadoop, Dell remains committed to providing open, standards-based solutions that enable customers to integrate new technologies without sacrificing performance or existing IT investments. Utilizing and integrating the efficiencies of the PowerEdge C line with optimized software and tailored services, the Dell OpenStack Cloud Solution enables users to take a server out of the box and be up-and-running on an OpenStack cloud in mere hours,” said John Igoe of Dell. “With Dell’s tested and validated designs in infrastructure, software, and services, customers can build out their IT presence and lower in-house costs.”
"Morphlabs leverages Dell's Openstack Crowbar technology to further enhance automation in the deployment of our all-SSD mCloud Rack, the most price performant converged private cloud infrastructure on the market," says Winston Damarillo, the founder and CEO of Morphlabs. "Dell's expertise in the OpenStack project combined with their Hyperscale PowerEdge C platform are key ingredients that turbo-charge the mCloud Rack, the leading Enterprise Dynamic Infrastructure Platform."
Jane Silber, CEO at Canonical concludes; “Ubuntu Server has featured OpenStack for two years and will continue to release updates at the same cadence with OpenStack in the coming years. The integration and availability of Ubuntu in the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution is ideal for the growing number of organisations that want to build open source, scalable and cost effective cloud infrastructures quickly and simply. We're excited to be a core part of Dell's cloud offering as it expands its OpenStack solution, and to continue to support Dell and OpenStack in the coming years.”
