Recent Dell performance studies tested the workload requirements and performance capabilities of five different Microsoft® SharePoint® server farms:
Large Farm with EqualLogic Storage
Under load testing, a large SharePoint farm built using Dell PowerEdge™ blade servers and Dell EqualLogic™ PS6100XV and PS6000XV iSCSI storage arrays could support more than 100,000 users with 10 percent concurrency. Both farm architectures had an average farm response time of 60 milliseconds or 0.06 seconds at the maximum speed — well below the one-second response time target.
Large Farm with Compellent Storage
A large SharePoint farm, built using Dell PowerEdge blade servers and Dell Compellent™ Storage Center storage arrays with Fibre Channel Controllers Series 40, was able to support more than 100,000 users with 10 percent concurrency. The farm architecture used in this study had an average farm response time of 87 milliseconds or 0.087 seconds at the maximum supported, which was well below the one-second response time target.
Medium Farm
A medium SharePoint farm configuration built using Dell PowerEdge M910 blade servers and Dell EqualLogic iSCSI storage could support almost 70,000 users with minimum 10 percent concurrence, and had an average farm response time that was well below one second.
Virtualized Small Farm
A virtualized small SharePoint farm built on Windows Server® 2008 Hyper-V™ R2, using PowerEdge rack servers and EqualLogic iSCSI storage could support approximately 15,000 users with a minimum concurrency of 10 percent, and had an average farm response time that was well below one second.
Small Farm
A small SharePoint farm built using Dell servers and storage could support approximately 20,000 users with a minimum concurrency of 10 percent, and had an average farm response time that was well below one second.
