Link Tuning Failure on PowerEdge M610x After Chassis Power Cycle

Article Summary: This article provides information on Link Tuning Failure on PowerEdge M610x after chassis power cycle

A Link Tuning Failure is logged on a PowerEdge™ M610x after the M1000e chassis undergoes a power cycle.

During a chassis power up the Chassis Management Controller (CMC) may report a blade server’s health as Not OK. The Remote Access Controller (RAC) log on the blade’s iDRAC indicates a Link Tuning Failure.

The issue is seen on iDRAC6 on blade servers during chassis power up.

The issue happens due to an IPMI timeout in iDRAC firmware.

The blade will power on normally. However there is a chance for the blade to not use the CMC assigned MAC address, if FlexAddress is enabled. This can result in blade server obtaining a different IP address.

Do not send any hardware. Update iDRAC6 firmware to version 3.1. or greater.

To obtain the latest iDRAC firmware, see Dell Remote Access Controller - DRAC / iDRAC.

Additional Information:

After powering on the chassis or inserting the blade, wait for a few minutes before powering on the server. This gives enough time for iDRAC to initialize its IPMI software stack.
If the Chassis is already powered on and this issue occurs, reboot the blade. This should result in getting the correct MAC address.
