OptiPlex 980 Mini Tower (MT) Teardown removal guide for computer replaceable units (CRUs)


These guides will take you step by step through the safe removal of what are considered to be the Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) parts of a OptiPlex 980 Mini Tower (MT) Chassis system. (CRUs are the parts of the system that shouldn't need an engineer to remove or replace.) The guides will also include pictures to reference what's involved.

2. Removal Instructions

Required Tools

1 Small Phillip's head screwdriver 2 Plastic Scribe
3 Small Flat head screwdriver

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the System Cover :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Pull on the cover latch until the system cover pops out.

  1. Lift the system cover off the chassis

  1. complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Front Drive Bezel :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Slide the drive release latch towards the base of the chassis and hold it in place.

  1. Swing the drive cover out from the right hand side, towards the left of the system and remove it.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Front Bezel :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover and Drive Bezel

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Unclip the five latches holding the front bezel to the front of the chassis.

  1. Release the two tabs on the upper front bezel.

  1. Swing the right hand side of the bezel out towards the left of the chassis and remove it from the chassis.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Optical Drive :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover and Drive Bezel

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Disconnect the Data Cable and the Power Cable from the rear of the Optical Drive.

  1. Pull and hold the release tab whilst pushing the drive towards the back of the system to unseat the drive from the securing slide.

  1. Pull the Optical Drive out the front of its bay.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Media Card Reader :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover and the Drive Bezel

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Disconnect any cables from the rear of the Media Card Reader.

  1. Pull and hold the release tab whilst pulling the drive cage out of its bay.

  1. Pull the Drive out of the system.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Disconnect the Data Cable and the Power Cable from the Hard Drive.

  1. Press the bracket tabs towards each other, whilst pulling the Hard Drive Assembly out of the system.

  1. Pull the sides of the Hard Drive bracket away from the sides of the Hard Drive, then remove the HDD bracket.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Expansion Card(s) :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Push the securing tab to release the card retention lock.

  1. For PCI-E x16 graphics card removal, gently push aside the release lever at the rear of the card whilst pulling the card straight out of the slot on the Motherboard. With other card types, you can pull the card straight out of the slot on the Motherboard.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Memory :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Gently Spread the securing clips away from the memory.

  1. Remove the Memory from the system.

Note: Repeat steps 3 and 4 if there are more than 1 memory DIMM to be removed.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Coin Cell Battery :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover and any Expansion Cards blocking access to the battery

  1. Press on the retention clip until the coin-cell battery pops up.

  1. Remove the coin-cell battery from the motherboard.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Internal Speaker :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  1. Disconnect the speaker connector from the Motherboard.

Internal Speaker Step3

  1. Unthread the internal speaker cable from the chassis.

  1. Release the speaker securing tabs from the front of the chassis, then remove the entire speaker assembly from the system.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Chassis Intrusion Switch :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Disconnect the Intrusion Switch cable from the Motherboard.

  1. Slide the switch down the side of the chassis and remove the switch from the system.

  1. Remove the switch and its attached cable from the system.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the THermal Sensor :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Disconnect the thermal sensor cable from the Motherboard.

  1. Unthread the front thermal sensor cable from the chassis.

  1. Release the hook to remove the thermal sensor from the front of the chassis.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the System Fan :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

Note: This Model comes with the Option of an Eco-Kit Fan. This fan reduces the system noise by up to 50%. The guide is the same for both Fans.

  1. Unthread all the cables routed over the processor fan.

  1. Disconnect the Fan cable from the Motherboard.

  1. Remove the four screws from the processor fan shroud.

  1. Remove the processor fan from the heatsink.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Wireless Module :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Lift the wireless antenna port release tab and then push the assembly towards the power supply.

  1. Unthread the wireless antenna cable from the fan shroud.

  1. Release the securing tab to remove the wireless module from the Motherboard.

  1. Remove the wireless module cover.

  1. Disconnect the two antennae.

  1. Release the WLAN card from the securing tab.

  1. Remove the WLAN card from the socket.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Power Supply Unit (PSU) :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the System Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Remove the four screws from the rear of the chassis.

PSU Step3

  1. Disconnect and unthread all the power cables from the Motherboard and drives.

PSU Step4

  1. Unthread the cables from the cable tidy on the bottom of the power supply.

  1. Press down the release latch and push the power supply towards the front of the chassis.

  1. Remove the power supply from the system.
