Dell XPS 18 May Experience Unusual Touch Behavior with Second Monitor Attached

This article explains unusual behavior that occurs with touch functions when a second monitor is attached to the Dell XPS 18.

Problem

Owners of the Dell XPS 18 may experience unusual touch behavior when using a secondary monitor in extended display mode.

When a secondary monitor is attached to the XPS 18 using one of the optional USB 2.0 video out devices (VGA, DVI, or HDMI) you may experience unusual touch functionality when using the secondary monitor in extended display mode. The secondary display in extended mode will automatically become the Windows 8 desktop. The XPS 18 display will be the primary and display the Windows modern user interface. If you attempt to touch anything on the primary display, the touch is errantly registered on the extended (secondary) display resulting in the operating system acting as if the secondary display has been touched. When this occurs, the primary display will immediately switch to the desktop and the user will be unable to touch or use any part of the normal Windows 8 modern user interface. A mouse will work as expected. These issues only occur with touch.

Solution

This problem cannot be fixed by replacing any software or hardware. It is an issue with Windows 8 and has been escalated to Microsoft. They are searching for possible solutions. To work around this problem, use a mouse for extended mode or have the secondary display in clone (duplicate) mode if touch is required on the XPS 18. Additional information on multiple monitor support can be found at the Microsoft Windows support site.
