The Broadcom® NetXtremeTM II 5709 Quad Port Gigabit Ethernet Mezzanine Card provides increased ports ideal for blade servers implementing virtualization. The increased ports provided are also valuable for segmentation in environments where security is increasingly more important. In addition to more ports, the 5709 features TOE (TCP/IP Offload Engine) and is able to perform accelerated networking on standard Ethernet for PowerEdgeTM M-Series servers. The Broadcom 5709 card TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) technology for Windows, reduces server CPU utilization and improves application performance. TOE offloads the TCP protocol processing from the server CPU onto the server mezzanine card. This preserves valuable CPU cycles for applications processing and improves overall server performance and network efficiency. Smart Load Balancing helps increase throughput and fault tolerance when network interface cards are configured to work together as a team to share traffic and eliminate bottlenecks.
Receive Side Scaling (RSS)
Receive Side Scaling (RSS) enables packet receive processing to scale with the number of available processors. TOE and RSS have been designed to meet the specifications outlined in the Microsoft® Server 2003 Scalable Networking Pack and Windows 2008.
