IDC SURVEY SHOWS GREEN IT REACHES A TIPPING POINT ACROSS EUROPE

A recent in-depth study of IT organisations in Western Europe found that almost of half of European enterprises now have a formal green IT strategy in place.

The IDC Green IT barometer, sponsored by Dell, included the views of 459 IT directors of European organisations with more than 1,000 employees and operating at least one datacenter.


Key Findings:

  • The barometer indicates that almost half of European enterprises are addressing the green and sustainable challenges facing them, with 34% of the respondents reporting that they have a green IT strategy in place now, while a further 15% plan to implement a green IT strategy within the next 24 months.
  • On average, those companies expect to deliver 14.5% real cost savings in the next 12 months.
  • The average IT budget for each respondent this year is 160 million euros, meaning companies with a green IT strategy expect to save nearly 23.2 million euros per year.

Main Conclusions:

  • Companies with an integrated green IT strategy expect to save money this year
  • European companies are realizing that Green IT can help them achieve the twin aim of improving their environmental reputation and saving costs.
  • IT directors don’t think in support of green should not be a soloed initiative. Collaboration is required across functional towers within organisations, across trading partners and across industry verticals.

Methodology:

  • The study polled 537 senior-level executives and managers in the four BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries; the United Arab Emirates and five other Gulf nations; and Mexico, South Africa and Vietnam.

The study polled 459 IT directors of European organisations with more than 1,000 employees and operating at least one datacenter.
  • The sample included organisations in the services sector (32.5%), the public sector (30.5%), manufacturing, construction and utilities sectors (28.5%) and the retail and wholesale sector (8.5%).
  • Companies came from 10 European countries, including 100 from France, 74 from the UK, 80 from Germany, 52 from Italy, 51 from Spain, 51 from the Netherlands, and 51 from the Nordics.
