NetWare 6.5 Overview:

Overview

Novell®  NetWare®  6.5 secures the product's position as being one of the most reliable foundations for deploying business-critical, open-source-enabled solutions. It is an obvious choice for hosting myriad services designed to increase network availability and user productivity while decreasing the cost of doing business. Specifically, NetWare 6.5 is an ideal platform for providing the following services:

Business-Continuity Services and Consolidation

Implement low-cost, scalable business-continuity services and consolidate your environment. Included with NetWare 6.5, Novell®  Cluster Services®  prevents server failures from bringing your network down. And at no additional licensing cost, you can deploy unlimited two-node server clusters in diverse geographical locations: if disaster strikes your primary location, your business-critical services automatically failover to a secondary location—without interruption.

NetWare 6.5 also supports Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI), enabling you to consolidate storage in an affordable, easy-to-manage Storage Area Network (SAN) that utilizes your existing Ethernet infrastructure. To help you migrate existing storage to your SAN, NetWare 6.5 includes an easy-to-use server migration wizard and server consolidation utility.

Also included is Novell NterpriseTM  Branch OfficeTM , which enables you to centralize storage and provide enterprise-class services for branch offices. (NetWare 6.5 ships with Nterprise Branch Office 1.0.2. For information on the latest version of Nterprise Branch Office, see http://www.novell.com/products/branchoffice/External link.) Because branch office data and services are replicated to a central data center, where you can easily back them up, you can also easily restore these resources if branch office hardware fails. Like other Novell Net services products, Nterprise Branch Office works with your existing network and the Internet. In fact, this remarkable product uses a standard Internet connection-as opposed to a costly wide area network (WAN) link.

Managing all aspects of your network just got easier. Your NetWare 6.5 license entitles you to a 250,000-user license of Novell eDirectory, a high-end directory service that simplifies the management of identities and security access for employees, customers and partners. NetWare 6.5 also includes Novell iManager, a convenient browser-based administration tool. iManager provides a global view of your network, no matter how widely dispersed it is. Your IT staff can now focus on projects that are more strategic for your business.

iManager also provides a convenient tool for managing the Novell DirXML®  Starter Pack, which is included with NetWare 6.5. This award-winning data-sharing service can simplify-and significantly reduce the cost of-managing multiple user accounts in your mixed networking environment. The DirXML starter pack includes drivers for Microsoft®  Active Directory®  to eDirectory, Windows NT®  domains to eDirectory, and eDirectory to eDirectory, along with password synchronization. (For information on the latest version of DirXML, now called Novell NsureTM  Identity Manager, see http://www.novell.com/products/nsureidentitymanager/External link.)

Finally, with NetWare 6.5 advanced snapshot technology, you can back up your consolidated store of critical information any day, at any time without interrupting network access.

Open-Source, Standards-Based Services

Take advantage of flexible open-source technologies-including Apache, MySQL, Perl, PHP and Jakarta Tomcat (all included in NetWare 6.5)—without adversely affecting system availability and network management costs. NetWare 6.5 is open-source-ready and ideal for running these popular technologies. By hosting open source technologies on NetWare 6.5, you benefit from the stability, reliability and technical support that NetWare is known for. In addition, iManager's intuitive interface keeps open-source management costs low.

Web application services
Confidently move forward with your cutting-edge Web-services strategy using Novell exteNdTM  Application Server and Workbench. Included with NetWare 6.5, this Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE)-certified application server helps you quickly develop and deploy portable Web services.

exteNd Application Server provides a foundation for solutions that integrate diverse legacy systems and unify your technology environment. Creating these solutions can be much simpler and less costly than you ever imagined. For example, several products in the acclaimed Novell exteNd product line—including Novell exteNd Composer and exteNd Director—offer an intuitive, visual development environment that can significantly reduce the amount of time and money it takes to develop these solutions. And all exteNd products are standards-based, which means you needn't worry about the perils of vendor lock-in.

Virtual Office Services
Help increase employee productivity across the far-flung reaches of your organization using the NetWare 6.5 Virtual Office. This integrated group of self-service products includes iPrint, an Internet-enabled print service through which users can locate and set up printers-without calling technical support. Virtual Office also includes Novell eGuide, iFolder® , personal Web page tools, and e-mail integration, which give users the ability to manage their own passwords, back up their own files, publish important information to the Web (and manage that information) and quickly find and communicate with colleagues.

Finally, Virtual Office includes Virtual Teams, which facilitates enhanced collaboration through real-time interaction tools. Users can create their own teams, organize projects, share information and more. And because all Virtual Office services are available virtually anytime and anywhere, users can count on receiving the essential resources these services provide when and where they need them.
