"We’ve reduced the number of physical servers we use from 45 to 12. As a result, we estimate that we should be making between £12,000 and £15,000 per year in electricity savings alone" - Sheila Davidge, head of information management and technology, Winchester City Council.
Winchester City Council found that management of its fast-growing server infrastructure was time-consuming and expensive. In addition, the distributed storage environment could not scale to accommodate a new Electronic Document Records Management System (EDRMS).
The council chose to consolidate its server infrastructure by introducing a scalable virtual environment based on VMwareTM software, DellTM PowerEdgeTM 2950 servers and a Dell | EMC CX3-20C SAN storage array Dell provided a comprehensive infrastructure consulting, implementation and support package.
>Consolidated server infrastructure cuts annual electricity costs by up to £15,000; Simplified operations deliver ease of management; Council staff can access mission-critical data quickly and easily; A secure storage solution scales to meet future requirements; New infrastructure helps deliver 100 per cent availability.
