New configurations of DellTM PowerEdgeTM servers, Dell/EMC storage and VMware software are designed to help customers use computing resources more efficiently by enabling single physical servers to act as two or more separate or "virtual" systems.
These solutions help increase utilization levels on 2- and 4-processor servers by enabling more applications to run on a single server. VMware's VMotion technology provides the ability to dynamically move applications to different physical servers based on business needs, such as peaks from end-of-the-month reporting or holiday Web traffic.
Dell has forged an alliance with VMware to help deliver these resource-optimizing capabilities to customers deploying servers linked together in "scale-out" or scalable enterprise architectures.

Greater Utilization, Higher Availability
The Dell-VMware Virtual Infrastructure configurations, tested and supported by Dell, include:
- Dell PowerEdge 6650 servers running VMware ESX Server 2.0.1, VirtualCenter and VMotion
- Dell/EMC CX300 and CX500 storage systems to enable VMotion capability; and
- A single Dell PowerEdge 1750 running the VMware VirtualCenter Management Server

In these configurations, VMware virtual machines can run different operating systems and applications on the same physical server. If one virtual machine fails or is being upgraded, the other programs and operating systems running on that physical server are not disrupted.Such capabilities help customers increase capacity and reduce server sprawl by consolidating workloads that typically run on underutilized servers onto fewer physical servers.
The Dell-VMware solutions also provide important capabilities towards building computing grids such as central management of virtual machines and more dynamic resource allocation over distributed servers.
