Sound adds weight and presence to our experience of images. From the creak of approaching footsteps to the rumbling of a spaceship flying out of sight, surround sound makes movie images feel more real.

Equipping your home theater with at least 5 speakers, plus a subwoofer to handle the bass sounds, is what helps transform a big TV into an incredible home theater.

Sound All Around
Sound All Around
In today’s entertainment productions, many microphones are used to record sound. In your home theater, these sound channels can be routed to different speakers to create a sense of depth and motion. When sound can move all around the room, you can really get swept up in the action.

How Many Speakers?
Audio quality designations of 5.1 or 7.1 — the highest sound-quality standard used today — tell you the number of channels available in a recording, and that corresponds to the number of speakers you’d need to most accurately reproduce the sound. The numbers 5 and 7 are the sound channels, and the .1 is the subwoofer.

Some television broadcasts are 5.1, as are most DVDs produced in the last five years. Audio quality is typically indicated at the beginning of a broadcast or noted on the box of a DVD.

To make your home theater great, go for 5 speakers plus a subwoofer and place them properly around the room. If you want to go high-end, try 7 speakers. Some people have stuffed their home theaters with up to 11 speakers. Now that’s going all out with sound.
