| Q | Should I create a wired Network or Wireless Network? |
| A | That’s a big question. The answer depends on how you want to use your network. We’ve put together an entire page full of facts, stats and opinions to help you make your decision.
|
| A | The word Ethernet refers to both the dominant networking standard used today and the actual cables that connect devices on the network.
|
| A | Also called Draft 802.11n, Wireless N is the new standard of wireless technology that is much faster than any previous standard. Draft 2.0 is the latest standard of Draft 802.11n. For more info, see our introduction to wireless networks.

| Q | What do I need to share an Internet connection? |
| A | To share an Internet connection on your home network, you must connect an Ethernet cable from your broadband Internet modem directly to the WAN port on the back of your router. Once the two are connected, any computer or device that connects to your home network will have access to the Internet connection.
|
| A | A firewall is a software package that enforces an access control policy between two networks. In other words, it’s a security device. Firewalls provide reasonable protection, but because no one thing can detect or stop all attacks, it’s important to use firewalls in conjunction with other security methods.
Firewalls allow the user to define access policies for inbound connections to the computers they are protecting. Many also provide the ability to control what services (ports) the protected computers are able to access on the Internet (outbound access). Most firewalls intended for home use come with pre-configured security policies from which the user chooses, and some allow the user to customize these policies for their specific needs.

| Q | What does antivirus software do? |
| A | There are a variety of antivirus software packages that operate in many different ways. All look for patterns in the files or memory of your computer that indicate the possible presence of a known virus. Antivirus packages know what patterns to search for based on known virus profiles (sometimes called "signatures") provided by the vendor.
New viruses are discovered daily, and antivirus software only works if it has the latest virus profiles installed. Always keep your software current and your version up to date.
