Data Center efficiency thru interoperability

With IT environments becoming increasingly interconnected with products from multiple vendors, interoperability is more important than ever. These enterprises are faced with challenges running multiple operating systems in their data centers, which can result in underutilized, disparate systems and high maintenance costs. Dell is committed to helping our customers run data centers efficiently and with low operating costs in heterogeneous environments, thereby enabling our customers to Run IT Better.

At Dell, we work with industry leaders on interoperability solutions that can allow customers to improve business processes and drive innovation.

Open Integration in a Proprietary World

As a result of Dell’s collaboration with Microsoft and Novell, our customers can implement comprehensive interoperability solutions with DellTM PowerEdgeTM servers running Windows Server®  2008 with Hyper-VTM  and SUSE®  Linux ® Enterprise 10. This solution makes it possible for customers to host virtual machines running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 on top of the Windows Server 2008 operating system using Hyper-VTM virtualization technology.

How it works:

Microsoft and Novell have delivered virtual machine adapters to facilitate communication between the Hyper-V or Xen hypervisor and the guest operating system to optimize one another’s operating system running in a “paravirtualized” environment. These adapters are built-in to Windows Server 2008 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server so that, out of the box, customers can start benefiting from the advantages of heterogeneous virtualization. The paravirtualization approach is an emerging trend and is designed to exact fast, efficient performance from existing chips.

Virtualization Scenario

Dell Bridges the IT Gap through Virtualized Solutions

Through combined work on virtualization, standards-based systems management, identity management and document compatibility, the Microsoft and Novell interoperability partnership enables customers to consolidate workloads to help increase efficiency and flexibility. Dell’s expansive family of award-winning servers can provide simple integration and maximum reliability, perfect for virtualizing heterogeneous IT environments.

Dell is the first major system provider to join the business collaboration that was formed by Microsoft and Novell in response to customer demand for greater interoperability and intellectual property (IP) assurance. The Windows | Linux Interoperability solution is a tested and validated solution that is ideal for customers who want a paid Linux distribution to help protect mission critical applications. This solution makes it possible for customers to leverage their existing investments and streamline systems to help control costs, reduce complexity and drive the business effectively. Currently, Dell is the only member of the Microsoft and Novell collaboration with a blades solution in the Microsoft and Novell Interoperability Lab.
