In November 2006, Microsoft and Novell agreed to pursue a collaboration agreement that would make it easier for customers to achieve interoperability in their mixed IT environments. To further ensure interoperability, Microsoft and Novell also agreed to provide customers with patent coverage. The technical collaboration is focused on four areas:

1.Virtualization
2.Standards-based Systems Management
3.Directory and Identity Interoperability
4.Document Format Compatibility

Dell is excited to take part in this business collaboration. Customers expect technology vendors to put their needs in the forefront, and by partnering with Microsoft and Novell, Dell will simplify customers' IT operations by focusing on three things:

1.Interoperability workshops
2.Migration proof of concepts
3.Migration services

Open Integration in a Proprietary World

Dell is committed to helping customers run more efficiently and lower operating costs in heterogeneous environments, thereby enabling customers to drive more innovation in the business. As the Linux industry navigates towards open source computing, Dell’s strong history and leadership in standards-based solutions provides customers the flexibility to implement solutions that are sustainable and support business growth.

Dell’s Global Infrastructure Consulting has a dedicated team for legacy system migrations to enable customers to take advantage of the latest technology architectures. Dell Global Infrastructure Consulting offers Unix to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) or Windows migrations, designed to provide better workload consolidation in data center environments, and improve power and cooling usage and reduce space requirements. Dell is committed to simplifying customers’ adoption of standards-based solutions that enable flexibility today…and tomorrow.

Business-Ready solutions that “Just Work”

Dell partners with leading Linux enterprise partners and community distributions, such as Novell® and Microsoft®, to bring business-ready solutions to customers, helping to reduce complexity and risk, and lower operational costs. Dell drives standardization and automation into our products, to optimize performance and ensure consistency. We have conducted extensive engineering around Linux solutions to minimize the work for your IT department.

Dell simplifies Linux management with Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS), which efficiently decouples driver releases from kernel releases, helping to provide an orderly method for distributing the latest drivers even before they’re available in the next major release of SLES. DKMS is just one of the contributions from the Dell Linux Engineering team, who are committed to supporting the Linux community with tools and information to simplify IT…with Dell, customers can expect solutions that “Just Work.”

Dell is committed to meeting customer needs – with the market for heterogeneous solutions growing rapidly, Dell is focused on helping customers drive out cost and complexity to enable interoperability. Our goal is to provide standardization across solutions, ensuring that hardware and software works seamlessly for customers.

Whether you are migrating a legacy platform, looking for an alternative Linux solution such as SLES, or streamlining the management of your infrastructure, Dell has the answer. Dell Global Infrastructure Consulting has established best practices in Linux migrations, utilizing a tools based approach to streamline deployment, which helps save customers valuable time and money to get up and running fast.
