Remarkable Designs, Breathtaking Drawings - Help Us Pick Our Winners
Today, we’re kicking off voting in our community-driven design challenges, one focused on green computing technology and the other focused on green ideas, visions and scenarios. The enthusiasm of both communities has proven to be truly remarkable, and we’re looking forward to having everyone weigh in through the online voting process.
The “Regeneration: International Green Computing Design Competition,” which recently completed its first round of judging, was conceived as a means for Dell to facilitate a broad public dialogue around design opportunities and trade-offs regarding environmentally-responsible design (including the entire lifecycle of computing technologies & products). The team set rigorous requirements for the competition, and had more than 500 design students and professionals from across the globe participate. The jury of six internationally respected sustainable design experts worked independently to evaluate and cull the initial range of entries and then assembled in Austin to select the top 5 Finalists.
The finalists represent a broad range of approaches to addressing sustainable design, including extending product life, alternative power, raising awareness to modify behavior and reducing redundancy. The finalists also range in concepts that are practical today to ideas for the future. We applaud the winners for their passion, enthusiasm and creativity.
Without further ado, here they are:

The community can now view and vote for their favorite single entry of the five finalists. Click on any finalist above to learn more about each submission and get started. Voting will close on May 7th and the final winner will be announced on May 15th.
The jurors, along with many of the universities, stressed the value of this program and also universally praised Dell for leading this competition. There is a strong desire for Dell to continue to use its stature to drive these discussions and to continue to lead in this area.
We’re also kicking off voting in the Facebook-Graffiti competition, which produced 4,889 illustrations and around 2,700 text entries.
Select Facebook-Graffiti entries are being featured as part of an online showcase highlighting different perspectives on ‘green.’ Some are also being featured in promotional vehicles inviting the community to take action. Members of the community can vote for their favorite entries (multiple opportunities to vote) through April 30, at which time ReGeneration.org and Graffiti will select the winners from the top 150 entries.
“This is called ” Welcome to Green City”. The city has a eco system..the time is not too much ahead in the future as you can see there are some buildings not too futuristic…U might notice the middle two buildings has a cone tree shape, it’s a reminder to understand the value of trees…btw that car is a hybrid, if it wasn’t it wouldn’t be allowed in Green City.”

This competition was a big disappointment. For the brief to state “begin new dialogue, refresh awareness, explore new directions”, ha!
I would have been less disappointed and still excited about this competition if Dell had showed all the 500+ entries. NOW THAT would have begun some interested dialogue and refreshed awareness and got people really thinking. Too bad the only discussion on most of the comments are how unsensible the solutions are.
If this is all we can come up with, we are so screwed.

I am thrilled at the concepts that are presented! Heather hasn’t got a clue if she thinks we are screwed! The future looks bright to me because such brilliant minds are at work! To all of those who presented their ideas I say well done!!!!!!

what ever happened to the criteria of user profile, usability and user interaction??
“Our focus is on the professional work space and life style that surrounds the use of computers. This focus spans from the personal computers used by individuals at home or on the go, to computer systems used by professionals at work, and the entire infrastructure supporting corporate computing deployment.”

I cannot believe that out of 500 + entries these are the most groundbreaking ideas we can come up with!

I agree with the negative comments. the results are disappointing. What a shoddy competition if these are the finalists.

This is the first time DELL holds such competition. If they want better results they should plan on having it every year so people get familiarized with it (see what Peugeot achieved for 4 years). Once the contest accumulates enough entries the level of the submissions will improve significantly. I think we should not only criticize the organizers but we should also help them (by submitting valuable entries) rich the level we all anticipate. I personally did not learn about it until 10 days before the deadline.
Good Job DELL, keep rolling!

Agreed. Good design takes time and dedication, and no solution is perfect. There are many steps in the process of creating a sustainable world, and every idea which is thoughtfully considered can open up new ways of thinking. I entered this competition as a student, mostly because I wanted to learn all that I could about sustainable technologies. My design wasn’t selected, but I did learn, a lot, so I thank Dell for making me explore. If you are really so displeased with the results of this competition, then take the initiative to start a better way to find the sustainable design solutions which we so desperately need.

Who is the winner? The communication in this contest is disappointing, too. Today we have the 21st of May and I don’t see a thing about the ranking! Not even a short statement from the jury about the results.

Steven, the winners have been chosen. You can expect to hear something on this site very shortly.
Thanks,

After reading the first two entries, I was very excited because they seemed like decent ideas…and then I got to the last three. They literally seemed like jokes.
With that said, I think it was a great idea by Dell, and like Boyan said, keep doing it and you will get better responses. Also, it was not publicized very well.

Will there be another competition this year in 2008?
