Michigan Teams With Dell to Retire State-Owned Computers

Michigan’s Department of Information Technology (DIT) recently contracted with Dell to manage the removal, refurbishment and retirement of computer equipment from state agencies. Dell will initially collect systems the state is currently storing and in the future collect computers as state agencies retire them. Dell’s environmental partners will run a destructive data overwrite on hard drives before refurbishing or recycling them. Michigan DIT is making the same program available to local governments, schools and non-profits throughout Michigan. Michigan DIT expects to conserve state resources by retiring computer equipment more efficiently through the Dell Asset Recovery Service (ARS) program.

In recognition of this partnership, Michigan DIT and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) partnered with Dell to offer Michigan consumers the opportunity to responsibly recycle used computer equipment. Michigan and Dell hosted three simultaneous computer collection events on Oct. 15 in Macomb County, East Lansing and Muskegon. Nearly 1,300 consumers statewide took advantage of the events, which collected more than 100 tons of used computer equipment.

Dell and Goodwill Michigan Launch Computer Recycling Service
Goodwill Association of Michigan and Dell in October introduced RECONNECT Michigan, a comprehensive computer recovery, reuse and environmentally responsible recycling opportunity for Michigan consumers. The pilot program allows any Michigan consumer to drop off any brand of used computer equipment at more than 70 Goodwill intake centers across the state. Goodwill organizations sort and consolidate the equipment and it is then delivered to a Dell environmental partner. Funds recovered from any refurbishment and resale are returned to Goodwill for investment in community building programs, and all other material is responsibly recycled in accordance with Dell guidelines. The partnership’s goal is to divert at least 3.3 million pounds of used computers and computer equipment from landfills over one year and to provide education on the importance of proper computer disposal while creating job opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other employment barriers throughout Michigan.
