Simple Server Expansion for Capacity

The PowerVault MD1000 direct attached storage array leverages higher capacity 3.5" drives and supports mixing both SAS and SATA drives within a single enclosure making it ideal for high-capacity applications. The modular design enables simple expansion, behind a PowerEdge RAID Controller 5/E and 6/E (PERC5/E and PERC6/E), up to 3 enclosures or 45 drives per RAID port. Or expand your existing PowerVault MD3000 and MD3000i external controller based storage arrays by daisy chaining 2 additional PowerVault MD1000 enclosures for a total of 45 drives. The versatility of the PowerVault MD1000 external RAID storage enables you to configure the specific combination of storage resources you need now, and add more storage volume later, while ensuring life-cycle and usability of your hardware for the long-term.
SAS drives are used for high performance storage

Excellent Drive Flexibility

The PowerVault™ MD family enables organizations to mix SAS and SATA drives delivering excellent flexibility to align data requirements with drive capabilities, speed, capacity and cost, to help optimize your storage environment.

SAS for Performance
SAS can deliver the speed, performance and reliability to satisfy mainstream single server applications. SAS performance makes it ideal for demanding server applications such as email or database applications that store active and frequently changing information.

NEW Nearline SAS - Performance of SAS, Capacities of SATA
The new 7.2K RPM SAS drives leverage the performance efficiencies of SAS making it ideal for customer who are looking for the low cost per GB but can't sacrifice performance. In everyday usage situations customers can see up to a 30% performance increase with the 7.2 RPM SAS drive over the 7.2 RPM SATA drives.
 GigabyteSATA for Capacity
SATA disk drives deliver a compelling cost-per-Gigabyte alternative to SAS. SATA drives are ideal high capacity applications where data is accessed and modified less frequently, such as digital imaging, file archiving, audio/video storage, or back-up to disk applications.

NEW Energy Efficient SATA
- Superior GB per Watt Solution
The new 5.4K RPM SATA drive offers customers a high capacity, energy efficient alternative to traditional SATA drives. Ideal for capacity intensive applications in a power constrained environments. This 5.4K RPM SATA drive can reduce power consumption up to 30% with less than a10% degradation in random I/O performance over some 7.2K RPM SATA drives.
PERC RAID Controller

PERC RAID Controller

The PERC RAID controller leveraged by PowerVault MD1000 external RAID storage array is the best available in-class PCI Express interface, offering excellent performance for enterprise. The RAID configuring on the PowerVault MD1000 enables your software to recognize the entire array as a single unit, regardless of how many disks you have activated for storage in the array, helping to increase reliability and fault tolerance. PERC 6/E offers:
  • Redundant connections offering failover protection, static load balancing and performance improvement over non-redundant path systems.
  • Enclosure firmware and hard disk drive firmware updated to be done while the system is online, reducing the impact to critical storage systems and enabling “on the fly” updates.
  • Advanced import enables administrators to import, or migrate, disk arrays created by a different PERC controller while the server remains online. The controllers can even import partial, or degraded, arrays and provide array preview capabilities before import to further enhance data serviceability.
  • Supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Dell PowerVault direct attached storage is engineered to work optimally with Dell PowerEdge servers. Dell OpenManage™ Storage Manager software can manage both the external array and internal storage within the server itself. Streamlining storage management through a single, common interface helps reduce resource load on the system, and is easier to navigate for the user as well.
