Help Me Choose: Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2400 Product Family

The processor plays an important role in your server’s ability to support internal business applications and respond to external customers. Since processors are continually changing, it can be difficult to determine which one is right for your application. You want to balance these considerations such as cost and features with your expected performance needs when selecting a CPU. This guide will help you make the best decision.

Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2400 product family supports the core features of the Intel® Xeon® processor E5 family: Intel-integrated I/O (input/output), Intel® Turbo Boost technology 2.0 and Intel® Trusted Execution Technology. These processors offer growing small and medium businesses an easy path to the high performance and reliability of an Intel® Xeon® processor E5 family-based platform. This processor offers up to 12 dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) and supports the latest PCIe 3.0 I/O interconnect to boost I/O bandwidth.

Selecting the Processor That Is Right for You

The Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2400 product family offers a range of processors that can deliver the right blend of performance, price and features to match different computing needs:

Advanced: Offers highest functionality and optimal server return on investment (ROI)
Standard: Best mix of performance, value and advanced features
Basic: Cost-sensitive customers seeking basic features
Low power: Focused on energy efficiency and designed to deliver lowest power and best performance per watt

Read the features and benefits tab for specific details about Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2400 product family. Note that moving between bands can yield significant performance gains. For example, moving from a “standard” series part (Xeon E5-2440) to an “advanced” series part (Xeon E5-2450) can achieve up to 25 percent* higher on an integer-based throughput workload (Specint_rate_base2006).

This tab lists the main features and benefits of the Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2400 product family.

In order to maximize both memory capacity and PCI throughput of the server system, a two-processor configuration is recommended. Limiting your configuration to one processor will reduce the number of memory channels and PCIe I/O lanes resulting in limited performance and expansion capabilities of your server system. For more information on your server hardware memory and PCIe I/O capabilities, refer to the system specifications provided on the product page.

Feature Benefit
Core & Count
  • Up to 8 cores and 16 threads per socket
  • Ideal for growing small and medium businesses
  • Up to 2.3GHz with 8 cores
  • Higher core frequencies deliver better performance ensuring your server can handle increased demands in the future

Memory & Cache

  • Up to 20MB of last level cache for fast access to frequently used data
  • Up to 12 DIMMs per 2-socket server
  • Faster maximum memory speeds (1600MHz) vs. the previous generation (1333MHz)
  • NOTE: Using faster DDR3 memory may decrease the total amount of system memory that can be populated running at the DIMM rated speed. 3 DIMMs per channel memory configurations will clock down, regardless of memory rated speed
Integrated I/O with Intel DDIO
  • Intel Integrated I/O provides up to 48 PCIe lanes per 2-socket server, reduces latency by up to 30 percent and supports the PCIe 3.0 specification, improving bandwidth by as much as over PCIe 2.0
  • Intel Data Direct I/O provides more than double the I/O performance by transmitting data directly from storage to cache

Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0

  • Provides more and higher performance boosts and improved efficiency vs. the previous generation
Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX)
  • Accelerates vector and floating-point computations by increasing maximum vector size from 128 to 256 bits
  • Provides up to 2x performance boost for floating-point operations, which can significantly increase performance for high-performance computing (HPC) applications
Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT)
  • Intel TXT lets IT establish trusted pools of virtualized resources for stronger security in virtual and cloud environments

Intel Advanced Encryption Standards

  • New instructions (Intel AES-NI) enable pervasive encryption with fast application response times
