Help Me Choose: Display

All Alienware™ laptop displays aren’t alike, which is why you should consider what you want to see on the screen before you buy. With the right display, hunting down your enemies becomes more realistic than ever before.

Even the most basic Alienware displays are created to support HD resolution in 16:9 (typical) aspect ratio, enabling you to view TV and movie formats in High Definition (HD).

If you want more from your display, Dell offers HD+ and Full HD (FHD) LCDs on select systems. These HD+ and FHD LCD panels have more pixels than traditional displays. The higher the number of pixels, the more detail you will see.

For example, HD resolution has 1366 horizontal pixels on 768 lines (more than 1 million pixels) while a HD+ display has 1600 horizontal pixels on 900 lines (more than 1.4 million pixels). Our FHD panels have an incredible 1920 horizontal pixels on 1080 lines (more than 2 million pixels). The greater the resolution of the panel, the more ideal overall viewing experience and increase in the amount of viewable content for many media-related tasks, including:

  • Enjoying Full HD movies on your computer
  • Making use of your digital camera to view photos in incredible detail
  • Having crisp reproduction of images and videos when you Skype in HD
  • Simultaneously working with multiple open applications on your desktop

The quality of the image on your laptop's display depends on several factors, including:

  • Size: Measured diagonally from the corners, not including the bezel or frame.
  • Resolution: The physical number of columns and rows of pixels creating the display. The more pixels you have, the higher the resolution, which means that more details can be displayed on the screen.
  • Brightness: The amount of light emitted from the display. This is also known as luminance and is measured in nits or candela per square meter. A Dell laptop display brightness emits from 200 nits up to 400 nits. A 300-nit display is up to 50 percent brighter than a 200-nit display.
  • Other attributes:
    • AntiGlare (AG): A matte finish that diffuses light, resulting in no reflection and narrower viewing angles. This makes it ideal for office settings and varying light conditions.
    • Truelife: A Truelife display has a glossy appearance, which amplifies the contrast ratio of the panel. Truelife technology delivers darker blacks and more vibrant colors that pop for vivid graphics. It is ideal for home, gaming or video use.
  • Contrast Ratio: The ratio of the intensity of the brightest bright to the darkest dark.
  • Viewing Angle: The maximum angle at which a display can be viewed with acceptable visual performance. A standard viewing angle offers 800 horizontally and 450 vertically, while wide viewing angles offer 1100 horizontally and 900 vertically.
  • Backlight: The form of illumination used in an LCD display. Currently, WLED and B+RG LED are backlights used in laptops. Backlights help determine the brightness and color gamut of the notebook.
  • Color Gamut: Color gamut is the range of color a display can reproduce and is commonly expressed as a percentage. Typical on a standard WLED panel is from 60 percent to a maximum of 75 percent. B+RG allows the panel to produce a color gamut of up to 95 percent.
  • 3D capable: Enjoy your entertainment in a whole new dimension. Take the media you already enjoy the way you like it best — lifelike, immersive, eye-popping and interactive — and enjoy it almost everywhere you go. Dell offers a high-quality 3D experience with optional Full HD (1080p) resolution 3D panel* plus Active Shutter technology.
