“We work closely with Dell to ensure we’re taking advantage of advancements that are relevant and will benefit us.”
-Brian Nourse, CIO
Dell supports Brian Nourse, CIO’s IT team from preparation through performance, inside and out of the office. From ticketing to results being deployed from the media centre, the Dell infrastructure is integral to a smooth execution of the Games. Hear what Brian has to say about our strategic partnership:
Dell is a very important partner providing IT hardware that we need both to help our teams prepare and throughout the venues helping with the staging of the events. We’ve got laptops and desktops being used by a growing team; our back office is made up of Dell servers and storage. We operate in a highly pressurized environment—with the obvious immovable deadline—and have a high reliance on our equipment working flawlessly. It’s crucial to ensure our computing environment that supports the Games works, and if there is an issue, we can get it resolved very quickly. With Dell, I have full confidence that we’ll be able to achieve that.
Planning and delivering for the Games is all about accomplishing goals and objectives we’ve set to achieve. A lot of our planning is centered on virtualized and hosted environments, which Dell is playing an important part of. In the same way an athlete spends years in planning and training, we as a team are making sure the technology services for the Games are achieving all they need to do.

“I spend a lot of time out at the village, and my tablet helps me stay in touch with the team, be able to visually monitor progress, take pictures, come back to the office and have the information to share with team members and in client meetings.”
-Caroline Rogers, Village Accommodation Manager for Glasgow 2014
Caroline Rogers, Village Accommodation Manager for Glasgow 2014 uses Dell to make sure accessibility requirements and placement preferences are met for the 70 delegations attending the Commonwealth Games. Since the Village will go on to serve as affordable housing for the people of Glasgow after the XX Commonwealth Games have come to a close, ensuring the building logistics go according to plan is important to the long-term impact the Games has on the city.
For Caroline, preparing for the arrival of thousands of athletes is all about communication and flexible problem solving. “Different countries have different priorities; for example, for Australia, it’s all about visibility, they want a very central location, whereas some countries like New Zealand want to be on the periphery to spend time together as a team, focusing,” she shares. Getting all of these preferences in from team leaders at different times, coupled with team sizes and rivalry considerations means Caroline needs all of this information at her fingertips at all times. She spends a lot of time at the Athletes’ Village build site, monitoring progress, snapping photos and keeping everyone abreast of the changes to the environmentally conscious Village.
The Athletes’ Village is designed to truly be a home away from home for all the athletes competing in the XX Commonwealth Games. From ordering the right ingredients for 2,000 menus, to coordinating laundry for 6,762 beds; from ensuring effective communication between venues to keeping up with progress on the build sites, reliable, connected technology is as necessary to Glasgow 2014 as running shoes

A year ago Team Dell were thrilled to welcome runner Lynsey Sharp, cyclist Elinor Barker and swimmer Oliver Hynd MBE as our UK brand ambassadors.
Between them, these impressive athletes have taken part in over 40 championships, won 63 medals and used our technology in combination with their training to give them the power to do more. In the last year they have demonstrated how integral technology is to their individual sports and engaged in a range of activities to inspire not only a future generation of athletes, but those of us who can only call ourselves fans.
