Dell Supports Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust’s Goal of Data-Driven Healthcare

Dell today have shared details on their work with The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust to deploy a new, virtualized IT infrastructure that makes it easier and more cost-effective for the Trust to provide efficient IT services to clinicians and deliver on its data-driven healthcare strategy to enhance patient care.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is at the forefront of the digitised healthcare transformation taking place throughout the NHS in the UK. The Trust’s move to a data-driven environment is designed to give clinicians fast access to patient information to improve how care is delivered. To support the increasing volume of data and applications within the Trust, they needed a more flexible storage and IT infrastructure to meet its evolving service requests. The Trust turned to Dell, a long term IT partner, to deliver a highly redundant, energy efficient IT infrastructure that offers the capacity and performance to meet the its needs.
Giles Madin, IT manager at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust explained: “After listening to our needs and challenges, the Dell account team proposed Dell EqualLogic storage as a replacement for our incumbent legacy solution. The new solution allows us to meet our capacity requirements and replicate data between our data centers for resilience and disaster recovery. There is no expensive support contract, just a pay-as-you-grow system that ties in with our needs. The Dell EqualLogic arrays were simple to deploy and didn’t require any specific training for staff.”
With the help of Dell, the IT team at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has built a mirrored solution for the Trust’s primary and secondary data center which contains virtualized Dell PowerEdge M620 servers running VMware vSphere 5.1 server virtualization software and Dell EqualLogic storage arrays providing backup and recovery in the event of a disaster or outage. Dell Performance Analysis Collection Kit (DPACK) was used to assess workloads on the Trust’s infrastructure to understand specific storage requirements. Using the information gathered from this analysis enabled the Trust to precisely size its storage infrastructure to gain greater performance and cost efficiency. The Trust also leverages the power of Dell ProSupport to ensure ongoing stability and maximise performance.
Since the deployment, the staff across the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has felt much more empowered. In particular, the oncology and diabetes departments are benefiting from improved data capacity and fast access to new applications running on the Dell PowerEdge M620 blade servers. The Trust has also reduced the costs of scaling its storage by an estimated 50 percent with Dell, no longer paying for an expensive maintenance contract or facing the issue of replacing the entire storage system when it needs more capacity.
