Help Me Choose: Networking Optics and Cables

 
Note: If you require connectivity at a distance further than 50 meters, you cannot select a direct attach cable. However, most direct attach cable options are up to 7 meters. For long distances, you must select the right combination of optics and cables based on distance and speed. This should be used a guide to help you make your selection. However, not all optics and cables work with all Dell Networking switches. Contact your Dell representative if you questions.
Optics 
Optics 
Optics are small form-factor pluggables (SFP, SFP+, QSFP+) that allow you to customize your connectivity, support a chosen distance between the two devices, and select custom cables.
Cables 
cables Cables come in various lengths and can be used with a wide range of short and long range optics. To use cables, you must select appropriate optics for connecting both ends of the cable.
Direct Attach Cables 
direct_attach_cables Direct attach cables do not require separate optics as the optics and cables are integrated. Available in a variety of short lengths up to 7 meters. 
Breakout Cables 
breakout_cables Transform one larger connection into multiple smaller connections. For instance, you can breakout a 40Gbps connection into 4x 10Gbps connections. These cables are perfect for expanding slower speed port counts where density is necessary. Breakout cables are available as standard cables requiring optics and are also available as direct attach cables. Start by choosing the appropriate tab above.

QSFP+ LR4 Optic, 40GbE

Use Case: For QSFP+ port 40GbE long distance connectivity up to 10km
Ethernet Standard: 40GBASE-LR4
Connection: Single Mode Fiber, LC connection
Note: This optic will NOT physically break out to 4x 10GbE connections. However, from a software/logical perspective,
the ports on either side can be set into breakout mode--as long as you're going from one QSFP+ port to one QSFP+ port physically. 
SFP+ Direct Attach Cable (Twinax)
SFP_Direct_attach_cable 
Use Case: For SFP+ port 10GbE connectivity over short distances (7m and less). Cheaper than optics, No Optics Required.
Lengths: .5m, 1m, 3m, 5m, 7m
SFP+ DACs cannot negotiate to 1GbE. 10GbE only.
