Achieve a High-Performance OLTP Database With SQL and PowerEdge R720

The PowerEdge R720 is a 2S 2U rack server designed for performance and scalability. Its front-loading PCIe SSD storage supports up to 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) network I/O (input/output) connection. PowerEdge R720 servers offer significant enhancements and benefits over the previous generation of PowerEdge servers.
To evaluate the database performance of the PowerEdge R720 server, the processor capabilities of the PowerEdge R710 and R720 server were tested using the standard SQL Server 2008 R2 database configuration. An OLTP test tool was used to simulate a TPC-E stress workload from a client machine. The same test benchmark was executed on both the PowerEdge R710 and PowerEdge R720.
Analysis of the test results showed the following database performance improvements for the PowerEdge R720 server over the PowerEdge R710 server:
- Improvement in transactions per second of 50 percent
- Improvement in response time of 30 percent
- Improvement in processor utilization of 80 percent
The PCIe SSD drives supported by PowerEdge R720 servers also demonstrated significant performance benefits critical for OLTP workloads, including low latency and high input/output operations per second (IOPS).
The enhancements of the PowerEdge R720 server make it a suitable solution for demanding applications and high-performance deployments.
