Leadership DevelopmentWith a commitment to develop and invest in our employees around the globe, Dell™ provides various opportunities for employees to learn and excel — enabling them to maximize their talents and inspire the next generation of Dell leaders. The following are some examples:

Taking the Stage is a mentoring program designed by women, for women. Our women leaders use this forum to teach, mentor and build relationships with future women leaders of Dell. As of 2009, more than 100 women in the U.S. and more than 600 women in EMEA have completed the one-day workshop. Based on attendee feedback, a follow-on program — Embracing the Stage — was launched in EMEA. With the success of the initial program, we’ve committed to making it a global program.

MentorConnect is our Web-based tool to help promote mentoring. This online portal connects mentees with willing mentors, broadening the geographic reach of mentoring opportunities and crossing functions and boundaries. As of 2009, more than 100 mentoring pairs have been established.

The Networking Group Leadership Series is a six-month program that provides current leaders a platform to share their expertise and learn from others by challenging conventional thinking, while building leadership capabilities through doing. This series allows Dell to build a diverse pipeline for our next wave of leadership. Our senior leaders are personally involved with this program and have taken extended periods of time to facilitate classes on leadership, the difference between managers and leaders, innovation and ways in which up-and-coming leaders can leverage their diversity to help Dell win. The direction and success of Dell’s business strategy requires the right behaviors from our leaders. Knowing this, we solicited input from our leaders and employees worldwide to create a global leadership model — Accelerated Development Programs — with inclusion as core leadership competencies:

  • Value differences
  • Drive alignment and synergies across the organization
  • Build strong networks internally and externally to influence strategic decisions
  • Understand the global, Dell-wide impact of individual behavior and decisions

Our Accelerated Development Programs — Leadership Edge, Leadership Excel, and Emerging Leaders — are targeted toward a select set of those Dell leaders. Participation in these programs is by nomination only from our key talent pool. The programs are intended to accelerate continued success and enable participants to heighten their performance, capabilities and contributions. Program participants are expected to take a proactive role in their own development, teach others and serve as a role model of Dell leadership globally. This year’s diverse representation in the Accelerated Development Programs was 29%, which was comprised of women globally (19% of total) and people of color in the U.S. (16% of U.S. participants).

In addition to these inclusion programs, we launched a new set of Manager Core programs in 2009. These programs focus on improving management and leadership capabilities of all Dell managers and executives.
