Christian Brothers High School Transforms Its Learning Environment with Dell

Dell announced today that Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tenn., has deployed the Dell Latitude XT3 Tablet PC as its primary learning tool for its “laptop-only” learning initiative. The school, starting with its freshman class, has completed its first year not using traditional textbooks.
Though the school’s electronic transition has been years in the making, administrators chose the Dell Latitude XT3 because of its ability to perform as a tablet, yet still give students the full capabilities of a PC. This allows students the ability to both consume and create information giving them a seamless learning experience.
“We are very pleased with the product and service provided by Dell and we look forward to partnering with them as we continue to make the shift to an all-digital curriculum,” said Chris Fay, principal, Christian Brothers High School. “Also, we will look to them as we phase in our comprehensive STEM curriculum. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and math courses more accessible and approachable for our students. Our relationship with Dell is an integral part of our plan for a top-notch STEM experience.”
The Dell Latitude XT3 Tablet PC features a spill-resistant keyboard and a large multi-touch screen that allows the laptop to alternate between PC and tablet, giving the students the flexibility they need for different academic subjects while providing a tough tool that withstands day-to-day transport. Along with the superior user experience and durability features, this device proved to be the most cost-effective solution for Christian Brothers High School because of its ease of manageability.
“We looked at dozens of devices from tablets to laptops, as well as various companies such as Apple to Kindle to Dell, and chose Dell for a number of reasons,” says Joe Hillenbrand, network administrator, Christian Brothers High School. “The XT3 was the stand-out choice because it looked like it was built for anything we wanted to do regarding personalized learning. An additional value, too, was that the Windows 7 OS was compatible with our existing infrastructure and we were able to set up and manage the XT3s quickly and efficiently.”
As an end-to-end technology provider, Dell helped Christian Brothers High School implement a holistic solution that addressed its front-end and back-end technology needs designed to improve the learning experience. Dell also worked with the school to set up a top-notch wireless environment and ensure all teachers and students have a reliable and secure experience. The school will also add storage and backup units this year with Dell’s help.

This past school year marks the first phase of the school’s one-to-one computing initiative, which began with the freshman class and faculty. This fall, Christian Brothers High School will implement the second phase of the program in which sophomores, in addition to freshmen, will be given their own Dell Latitude XT3 Tablet PC. Following the second phase, the school will equip all 850 students, making their school the only one in the region to achieve a fully digital learning environment.
