Dell Improves Knowledge Access By Enhancing Dubai Culture and Arts Authority’s Technology Infrastructure to Support Growing Library Usage

Knowledge is only as good as the ease of access to it. Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the city’s governing body for the care of libraries and the arts, had an outdated, completely physical networking infrastructure, running at a speed of about 1GbE, which consumed excess energy and space, and did not allow the infrastructure to scale. It impeded staff productivity, and frustrated library users and others drawing on Dubai Culture’s resources.
Following Dubai Culture’s expansion, including the integration of at least eight Dubai public libraries and the Dubai museum, as well as supporting various projects ranging from art fairs to theatre productions, Dubai Culture needed an IT infrastructure that would allocate its resources centrally with maximum efficiency.
After assessing the situation, the Dell team suggested virtualizing Dubai Culture’s infrastructure. Dell proposed a phase-one private cloud solution with a completely virtualized converged infrastructure, centralized in its main data center. The solution replaced HP servers and storage, and Cisco’s legacy networking, security and IT management. Dell proposed the Dell Force10 for an end-to-end 10/40GbE network connectivity; Dell PowerEdge™ Blade Servers with Microsoft Hyper-V™ for server virtualization; Dell EqualLogic 10GbE storage arrays; and Dell SonicWALL NSA security appliances.
The centralized solution enabled Dubai Culture to allocate its IT resources in the main data center to its various branch entities such as Dubai Public Library and the Dubai Museum. Additionally, virtualization increased response times for requests, maximized IT efficiency, and strengthened service quality; in addition to saving space, reducing energy consumption and automating IT management.
To provide Dubai Culture streamlined IT management, Dell provided a single point of contact for all the organization’s IT needs. The support model provides Dubai Culture with direct contact to award winning Dell ProSupport, empowering them with resources and expertise at all times. Dell has also conducted regular educational workshops and training with Dubai Culture’s IT staff to facilitate their transition to the new model.
