• End-to-end Dell IT Infrastructure replaces legacy systems
  • Secure, virtualized environment designed to accommodate rapid digital growth
  • Availability increased significantly, while footprint, energy use and IT support hours decline

Dell Canada announced that Distributech, a leader in providing outsourced customer communications solutions to many of Canada’s leading brands, and its investor-communications solutions firm, subsidiary InvestorCOM, have worked with Dell to design and build a new end-to-end integrated IT infrastructure to facilitate the company’s transformation to a digital software-as-a-service (SaaS) company.

The new virtualized solution, housed at Distributech and InvestorCOM’s two data centres in Toronto and Markham, Ontario, replaces legacy systems that were hampering the firm’s growth potential. Built using seamless integration between 11 of Dell’s product platforms, including servers, laptops, storage, networking, firewalls and backup, the new Dell infrastructure is now capable of handling the millions of daily online data transactions sent and received on Distributech’s SaaS platforms (DOX, Investor POS) and internal processing systems.

The main data centre comprises three Dell PowerEdge R620 servers, two Dell Networking N4024 10GbE Layer 3 switches and one Dell EqualLogic PS6210 storage area network with 18TB of usable capacity. Dell used Microsoft Hyper-V to virtualize 50 physical servers and Microsoft System Centre Virtual Machine Manager for administration. A similar configuration was deployed at Distributech’s secondary disaster recovery location.

This virtualized environment addresses the high-availability, reliability, security and compliance needs of Distributech’s growing number of customers, particularly in banking and financial services. The new infrastructure with the resulting increased storage has significantly increased availability of a number of legacy applications. At the same time, server footprint has shrunk by 75 per cent, energy use by 50 per cent a year and demands on IT staff for firefighting and troubleshooting have significantly decreased.

Scalability issues are addressed using Dell Plug and Play technology, which allows Distributech to easily add more storage, switch and networking capacity as required as the company continues to grow. Distributech also acquired firewall, application management devices, load balancers and Microsoft server and SQL licensing to support its updated infrastructure.

Dell PowerVault tape backup and Dell SonicWALL firewalls at both the primary and secondary data centres provide security and ensure data integrity. Dell Latitude 6 Series laptops and Dell OptiPlex PCs are now standard for all employees.

Having a single-vendor, standardized, end-to-end solution simplifies management and reduces on-going maintenance and support costs. Distributech and InvestorCOM’s IT staff, including three infrastructure team members, use Dell OpenManage Essentials to manage all the hardware components including servers, storage, networking and firewall appliances, and Microsoft System Centre to run the virtual servers. Distributech’s shared services team estimates the new infrastructure will free up staff hours annually that were previously spent on firefighting problems associated with the aging systems, positively impacting staff morale as the entire IT team can gain experience managing a complete platform.

Distributech’s shared services team drew on the expertise of Dell Professional Services, Dell Deployment Services and Dell Support Services to design, architect and manage the deployment of the new IT infrastructure.

Dell Financial Services assisted with the financing of the deployment on a lease-to-own, pay-as you-grow basis.

"Dell is at the perfect sweet spot for pricing and first-class service. They understood our needs and were able to put together a complete end-to-end solution that can grow as we grow. By virtualizing our systems we’ve reduced our server footprint by 75 per cent and lowered our energy use by 50 per cent, while at the same time enhancing our customer experience." – Randy McIver, vice president of Information Technology, Distributech.

"Distributech and InvestorCOM gave Dell the perfect opportunity to showcase our full range of capabilities, from the initial design of an integrated end-to-end IT infrastructure, through deployment and financing. It was an exciting experience for the team to build a system from the ground up using our full product range from servers, storage, networking, switches, PCs and laptops, professional services and financial services. We look forward to future work with Distributech and InvestorCOM as they continue on their growth trajectory." – Andre Valiquette, vice president, Commercial Sales, Dell Canada Inc.
