Alienware Windows 8 Upgrade Product Support

Alienware X51

Alienware X51 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The X51 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following product-specific issues directly after upgrade:



Problem: Bubbles Screen Saver has a black background.

Solution: This is working as designed, no fix is available.


Alienware M18xR2

Alienware M18xR2 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The M18xR2 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:



  • If you are upgrading to Windows 8, be sure to download the latest Windows 8 driver for your WirelessHD card from the M18x_R2 support site to ensure proper function. Currently we are working on a new driver for Windows 8, which will be ready soon at the Dell Drivers and Downloads website.
  • If you are upgrading to Windows 8 AND have a single graphics card, you will need to download the latest Windows 8 driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website to ensure your graphics card is working correctly.
  • If you are upgrading to Windows 8 AND have dual graphics cards, you will need to download the latest Windows 8 driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website to ensure your graphics card is working correctly.


Alienware Aurora-R4

Alienware Aurora-R4 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Aurora-R4 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:



Problem: System cannot detect graphic card if Secure Boot is enabled.

Solution: Disable Secure Boot in the BIOS if you are upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The Aurora-R4 cannot upgrade to Windows 8 with a RAID configuration in place.

Solution: Before upgrade, ensure that the Intel C600 Series Chipset SATA RAID Controller shows version 3.5 or higher in the Driver tab in Device Manager. Be sure to install the latest version of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website prior to upgrade to Windows 8.


Alienware M11xR3

Alienware M11xR3 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The M11xR3 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:



Problem: You can no longer switch display functions using the Fn-F1 key combination.

Solution: This is working as designed, no fix available.


Problem: Bluetooth 375 cards cannot receive files from another system via Bluetooth file transfer.

Solution: Windows 8 native drivers will install for this device, and an update from Windows Update will resolve the issue.


Problem: Bluetooth 375 cards cannot send files to a second system without previously pairing.

Solution: Windows 8 native drivers will install for this device, and an update from Windows Update will resolve the issue.


Problem: You cannot switch audio from internal speakers to an external display using a HDMI or DisplayPort cable.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: Your computer displays a white screen after resuming from hibernate.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: Your system is unable to switch to Clone Mode via hot keys or the Nvidia Control Panel.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: Intel Graphics control panel disappears after upgrade to Windows 8.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: Your computer screen will flash when you hibernate, turn off or restart the computer with Windows 8 installed.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The screen brightness bar of the On Screen Diagnostics does not function normally in Windows 8 using the Fn+F4 and Fn+F5 hotkeys.

Solution: Screen brightness has seven levels of adjustment in Windows 7, compared to 10 levels in Windows 8. Use of the function hotkeys to adjust brightness is not recommended. Instead, use the built-in brightness adjustment feature in Windows 8 to set the brightness level.


Problem: The Dell Wireless 5800 Mobile Broadband driver and application cannot be installed or shows a yellow bang in Device Manager in Windows 8.

Solution: Dell recommends using the Windows 7 driver INF files from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website to install the wireless adapter.


Problem: After upgrading to Windows 8 the Alienware AW2310 monitor may to black out on half the screen after resuming from hibernate.

Solution: The AW2310 is not supported for Windows 8. Powering the monitor off and on again will resolve the black screen.


Alienware M14xR2

Alienware M14xR2 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The M14xR2 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:



Problem: After Windows 8 upgrade, the computer does not boot up even though the Power button lights up brightly, however the screen flashes repeatedly.

Solution: Be sure to update your BIOS from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.

  • If you are upgrading to Windows 8, you will need to download the latest WiMax 6250 Windows 8 driver from Intel's Download Center website to ensure your wireless card is working correctly.
  • If you are upgrading to Windows 8, be sure to download the latest Windows 8 driver for your WirelessHD card from the M18x_R2 support site to ensure proper function. Currently we are working on a new driver for Windows 8, which will be ready soon at the Dell Drivers and Downloads website.


Alienware M17xR4

Alienware M17xR4 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The M17xR4 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:
