Computer Does Not Turn On When Pressing the Power Button on a Dell™ Latitude™ D620 or D820 or a Dell Precision™ M65

Power Button Located on the System´s Keyboard May Cause Startup Issues

After pressing the power button on a Dell laptop computer, the computer may not turn on. This problem may occur with one of the following models of Dell laptop computers:
  • Dell Latitude D620
  • Dell Latitude D820
  • Dell Precision M65

The power button circuitry on these computers is built in to the keyboard. Therefore, this problem may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • The keyboard is defective.
  • The keyboard is not connected to the computer motherboard correctly.

This article contains information about how to troubleshoot this problem.

Use the Wireless Catcher Switch to Determine Whether the Computer Has Power

To determine whether the keyboard causes the computer to remain turned off when the power button is pressed, verify that the computer has power. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Plug the computer in if it is not already plugged in.

  2. Locate the wireless catcher switch on the left side of the laptop computer.

The wireless catcher is a momentary switch that is used to detect wireless networks without turning on the computer. An LED light next to the wireless catcher switch displays whether a wireless access point is in range.

  3. Slide the wireless catcher switch, and then release it. Note whether the LED light turns on.
It does not matter what color the LED light displays. For the purposes of this article, the LED light is only used to determine whether the computer has power.

If the LED light turns on, the problem is likely with the keyboard. In this situation, reseat the keyboard connector.
If the LED light does not turn on, the problem is likely caused by another component.
