Prepare the Hard Drive

  1. Turn on the computer.

  2. Press the <F12> key once a second until Preparing one-time boot menu.. shows in the upper right corner of the screen.

  3. Insert the Dell MediaDirect Reinstallation CD into the CD/DVD/CD-RW drive.

    • Select Option 1 from the menu if you wish to use all of the hard drive for your operating system installation.
This is the most common selection and is how your computer was originally shipped to you, unless you specified an operating system partition size at the time you ordered your computer.

    • Select Option 2 if you wish to designate a size for your operating system and have a data partition.
This will allow you to specify a size for the operating system partition, leaving the remainder of the hard drive configured as a “data” partition (D:).

    Note:
This process creates separate sections on the hard drive. One for the Media Direct software to be installed after the Operating System is installed and one for the Operating System itself.

  7. Once the hard drive is prepared you will be returned to the main recovery menu, remove the Dell MediaDirect Reinstallation CD from the CD/DVD/CD-RW drive.

  8. Insert the Microsoft Windows Operating System reinstallation CD or DVD.

  9. Select the option to reboot your computer.

  11. Use the up/down arrow buttons to highlight CD/DVD/CD-RW.

  12. Press <Enter> to start the install process.

    • For detailed instructions regarding reinstalling Microsoft Windows, refer to Dell Knowledge Base article: Software Reinstall Guide Article ID: 295234.

When installing Microsoft Windows Vista select the Primary Partition when prompted. If you have two hard drives, select the Primary Partition on the same disk where the MediaDirect partition resides.
