How to Resolve Issues with Your Dell Desktop Monitor?

This article has instructions to resolve issues with your Dell desktop monitor; If it is blank, black or not turning on.


Confirm that your computer is turned on

  1. On the lower-right, front corner of the monitor, look for the monitor power LED.
  2. Press the power Button ON.
  3. Status of Monitor Power LED:
    • No light – The monitor is not receiving power.
    • Amber/yellow light – The monitor is not receiving consistent power.
    • Green/blue light – The monitor has power.

Check the power connection to your monitor

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall outlet.
  2. Plug the power cord into the back of the monitor, and then into a working wall outlet.
  3. Press the Power button on the monitor.
  4. If your monitor still does not have consistent power, look for another power cord (If available).
    Often a computer power cord can be used as a monitor power cord.
  5. If your monitor still does not have power, contact Dell Technical Support for further assistance.

Confirm that your video cable is connected to your monitor

If a secondary video card is installed in your computer, the standard video port is disabled. Your monitor must be connected to the secondary video port.

If you have a connector type other than the above, you will need an adapter to connect your monitor to the computer.

Confirm your video input source

Use the Quick Access or Input button to confirm that your selected video input source works with your monitor’s video card.

Your power light must be green/blue and an LCD cable connected to the system for the process to work.

Built In Self Test for LCD Panel

LCD BIST a.k.a Built In Self Test for LCDs can help in determining issues with the panels. There are several methods to initiate the test.


Stand Alone BIST:
  1. Press and hold the D key on the keyboard while pressing the power button, then release both at the same time.
  2. This will initiate A grey screen, then Red, then Blue, then Green then White, to allow you to inspect the entire LCD for color purity on each screen and to better identify defect such as cracks in the LCD or stuck pixels that may not be apparent in a normal viewing mode.
    Few LCD Panels may also display a white screen with black text to help identify focus/clarity issues
Using ePSA/PSA Diagnostics:
  1. Shutdown the computer.
  2. Power on the computer and press the F12 Key. Release the key when the lock lights above the keyboard begin to flash or Diagnostic boot selected is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Diagnostics and press the Enter
  4. When the colors bars are displayed press N when it asks if they were displayed correctly - even if the colors looked fine.
  5. This will initialize the LCD BIST test.

Online - Monitor Diagnostic Test

There is an interactive diagnostic text available online for Monitors. This text would diagnose issues with color depth, alignment and monitor resolution.
Follow the steps below to proceed

  1. Confirm that the data cable is disconnected from the graphics adapter.
  2. Go to the Dell PC Diagnostics.
  3. Under Let's Diagnose an issue, select Hardware .
  4. On the Diagnostic Selector list box, click Monitor.
  5. Click Run Diagnostics.
