Getting Dell Printer Drivers, Software, User Guides and Firmware

Driver and firmware releases are designed to update features and to correct functionality, it is recommended to update to the latest versions available for your printer.


Dell Laser Printers

  1. Uninstall The Existing Dell Laser Printer Drivers
  2. Download and Install the Latest Dell Laser Printer Drivers
  3. Update the Dell Laser Printer Firmware by Downloading and Installing the Latest Version

A: Uninstall the Existing Dell Laser Printer Drivers

Before reinstalling any printer drivers, it is best to remove any printer drivers that were previously installed, not doing so can cause problems that prevent the computer from communicating with the printer.

To uninstall previous printer drivers:

  1. Turn the printer on.

  2. Make sure the Dell Laser Printer is connected to your computer (USB cable, wireless or wired).
    Note: If the printer is no longer available, you may have less success removing the printer without it being attached.

  3. Make sure there is nothing in the print queue.
    For more information, refer to the Dell Knowledge Base article How to Cancel a Print Job in the Queue and follow the instructions.

  4. Run the Printer troubleshooter to diagnose and automatically correct any printer spooler issues. For more information, refer to the Dell Knowledge Base article, How to Resolve Printer Spooler Errors.

  5. Uninstall the printer:
    • For Windows 10 perform the following steps:
      1. In the Search box type control panel.
      2. Touch or click Control Panel .
      3. Touch or click View devices and printers.
      4. Touch and hold or right-click the desired printer (when the printer is not listed no further actions are needed).
      5. Touch or click Remove device.
      6. The User Account Control window may appear, if so touch or click Yes.
      7. Touch or click Yes to remove the Printer.

    • For Windows 8.1 perform following steps:
      1. Move the cursor to the upper right corner of the screen until the Charms Bar appears.
      2. Click or touch Settings.
      3. Click or touch Change PC settings.
      4. Click or touch PC and devices.
      5. Click or touch Devices.
      6. Click or touch the printer you want to remove (when the printer is not listed no further actions are needed).
      7. Click or touch Remove device.
      8. Click or touch Yes to remove the printer.

    • For Windows 7 perform following steps:
      1. Click the Start button.
      2. Click Devices and Printers.
      3. Right-click the printer you desire to uninstall (when the printer is not listed no further actions are needed).
      4. Select Remove device.
      5. Click Yes to remove the printer.

    • For Windows Vista perform following steps:
      1. Click Start.
      2. Click Control Panel.
      3. Click Printer.
      4. Click File.
      5. Click Server Properties.
      6. Click the Driver tab.
      7. Click the driver(s) you want to remove.
      8. Click Remove.
      9. Click Yes to confirm the removal.
      10. Click Close.

    • For Windows XP perform following steps:
      1. Click Start.
      2. Click Control Panel.
      3. Click Printers and Faxes.
      4. Click File.
      5. Click Server Properties.
      6. Click the Driver tab.
      7. Click the driver(s) you want to remove.
      8. Click Remove.
      9. Click Yes to confirm the removal.
      10. Click Close.
Note: Disconnect any USB cable from the printer, wait for the installation process to tell you when to reconnect a USB cable.

B: Download and Install the Latest Dell Laser Printer Drivers

Driver releases are designed to update features and to correct functionality, it is recommended to update to the latest version of the drivers available for your printer.

Note: When looking for Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7 drivers for your printer and it is not listed as having any, some or all of the printer's functionality may still be available using Compatibility Mode as a means to install printer drivers from a past version of Windows.
  1. Browse to the Dell Support site.

  2. Enter your printer's Service Tag or Express Service Code to get a concise list of drivers for your printer, and then touch or click Submit to continue. To locate your Service Tag or Express Service Code, browse to the Where is the Service Tag located for Printers? page.
    Note: When the Service Tag is not available:
    1. Touch or click Choose from all products.

    2. Touch or click Printers.

    3. Touch or click Mono Laser Printers or Color Laser Printers depending on your printer type.

    4. Select your printer model (the model number of your printer is shown on the front of the printer).

  3. Touch or click the Drivers & downloads tab.

  4. Touch or click Change OS.

  5. Select the desired Operating System from the list.
    Note: Not all Operating Systems are supported on all printers. The list shows all of the Operating Systems that are supported on your printer and may not include the desired Operating System.

  6. Touch or click Show All.

  7. Touch or click View details next to the desired file.
    Note:
    • The Application download contains a toner re-order application, users guides and troubleshooting utility or utilities. Some applications also include the printer drivers. When Driver is not listed in the description, then you will also need download and install the driver(s) from Drivers For OS Deployment. In fact some printers have a driver for each function of the printer and will have to be downloaded and installed separately.
    • When an Application section does not appear, then only print drivers are available for download.

    • By downloading, you accept the terms of the Dell Software License Agreement.

  8. On the driver page, refer to the Installation instructions located at the bottom of the page on how to download and install the driver.

C: Update the Dell Laser Printer Firmware by Downloading and Installing the Latest Version

Firmware releases are designed to update features and to correct functionality, it is recommended to update to the latest version of firmware available for your printer.

  1. Browse to the Dell Support Page page.

  2. Enter your printer's Service Tag or Express Service Code to get the latest firmware for your printer, and then touch or click Submit to continue. To locate your Service Tag or Express Service Code, browse to the Where is the Service Tag located for Printers? page.
    Note: When the Service Tag is not available:
    1. Touch or click Choose from all products.

    2. Touch or click Printers.

    3. Touch or click Mono Laser Printers or Color Laser Printers depending on your printer type.

    4. Select your printer model (the model number of your printer is shown on the front of the printer).

  3. Touch or click the Drivers & downloads tab.

  4. Touch or click Change OS.

  5. Select the desired Operating System from the list.

Dell Inkjet Printers

A: Uninstall the Existing Dell Inkjet Printer Drivers

Before reinstalling any printer drivers, it is best to remove any printer drivers that were previously installed, not doing so can cause problems that prevent the computer from communicating with the printer.

To uninstall previous printer drivers:

  1. Turn the printer on.

  2. Make sure the Dell Inkjet Printer is connected to your computer (USB cable, wireless or wired).

    • The Application download contains a cartridge re-order application, users guides and troubleshooting utility. Some applications also include the printer drivers. When Driver is not listed in the description, then you will also need download and install the driver from Drivers For OS Deployment.
    • When an Application section does not appear, then only print drivers are available for download. If in doubt download and install all the files listed in the Drivers for OS Deployment section.

5. Obtaining the Software Included With Your Dell Printer

  • The drivers and management software for your printer are available on the Dell Support Page. To install the extra non-Dell (3rd party) software (such as the Optical Character Reader (OCR), PaperPort etc.) that came with your printer, you will need the Compact Disc or DVD that came with the printer. These non-Dell software are licensed and cannot be put on our web site.

  • As an alternate there is a free (shareware) version of an OCR available for download entitled Simple OCR.
