This article defines issues with supported Inspiron Laptop systems immediately after upgrading to Windows 8, and the solutions for those issues if available.


5323/13z

Inspiron 5323/13z systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron 5323/13z does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following product-specific issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: For Fast Access Facial Recognition software, Continuous Security does not function when you change the security level and set to Continuous Security w/AC.

Solution: Update the Fast Access Facial Recognition software, available from My Dell Downloads.


5425

Inspiron 5425 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron 5425 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: The video driver shows a yellow bang in Device Manager.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The 1703 and 1901 Bluetooth cards show a yellow bang in Device Manager.

Solution: Dell recommends uninstalling your Bluetooth software before upgrading to Windows 8. After the upgrade is complete, be sure to reinstall your Bluetooth driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website.


Problem: The card reader shows a yellow bang in Device Manager.

Solution: Be sure to update your chipset driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website after upgrading to Windows 8.


5420/14R

Inspiron 14R 5420 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron 14R 5420 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: System cannot detect graphic card when Secure Boot is enabled.

Solution: Do not turn on Secure Boot if you intend to upgrade to Windows 8.


7420/14R(SE)

Inspiron 14R 7420 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron 14R 7420 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:

M4040

Inspiron M4040 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron M4040 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: A blue screen appears during the installation of the WLAN driver (1702) in the German version of Windows 8.

Solution: During the installation process for the WLAN driver, a Windows Security warning message is displayed during the installation. Be sure to uncheck the option "Do Not Install Driver".



N4050

Inspiron N4050 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron N4050 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: A flashing screen occurs when resuming from hibernate after installing the AMD 7450 Windows 8 driver.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: Flashing screen occurs when playing a DVD Movie after installing the AMD 7450 Windows 8 driver.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: You lose access to function items in AMD 7450 Control Panel after installing the Windows 8 driver.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The following issues are seen with the DW1702 Bluetooth Windows 7 drivers in Windows 8: cannot install driver, non-functioning buttons in Bluetooth control panel, loss of some Bluetooth services.

Solution: Dell recommends uninstalling your Bluetooth software before upgrading to Windows 8. After the upgrade is complete, be sure to reinstall the DW1702 Bluetooth driver from the DellDrivers and Downloads website.


Problem: Most function buttons in the Bluetooth control panel do not work in Windows 8.

Solution: Dell recommends uninstalling your Bluetooth software before upgrading to Windows 8. After the upgrade is complete, be sure to reinstall your Bluetooth driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website.


Problem: The brightness of the LCD is very low and almost black when the computer is powered on.

Solution: Be sure to update your system BIOS from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The display switches to the external monitor after shutdown or restart.

Solution: Be sure to update your system BIOS from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


M5040

Inspiron M5040 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron M5040 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: Bluetooth does not return to previous setting after changing Airplane Mode to On and Off.

Solution: Dell recommends uninstalling your Bluetooth software before upgrading to Windows 8. After the upgrade is complete, be sure to reinstall your Bluetooth driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website.


Problem: Wireless control switch does not control WLAN after changing Airplane Mode to On and Off.

Solution: Dell recommends uninstalling your Bluetooth software before upgrading to Windows 8. After the upgrade is complete, be sure to reinstall your Bluetooth driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website.


N5050

Inspiron N5050 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron N5050 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: The display will auto switch to an external monitor during the Windows 8 upgrade process.

Solution: Be sure to update your system BIOS from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: Sound is broken from a Bluetooth headset when searching for another Bluetooth device.

Solution: Dell recommends uninstalling your Bluetooth software before upgrading to Windows 8. After the upgrade is complete, be sure to reinstall your Bluetooth driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website.


N5040

Problem: When you open Windows Mobility Center, a QuickSet error is displayed.

Solution: Be sure to update your wireless driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website after upgrading to Windows 8.


N4120

Inspiron N4120 systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron N4120 does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: The system resumes from hibernate automatically in Windows 8.

Solution: Be sure to update your system BIOS from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: A yellow bang is shown for the AMD Radeon 6630M driver in Windows 8 Device Manager

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


M4110 / M411R

Inspiron M4110 and M411R systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron M4110/M411R does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: The system resumes from hibernate automatically in Windows 8.

Solution: Be sure to update your system BIOS from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The function items in AMD Control Panel are lost.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The Bluetooth control panel disappears after pairing with another Bluetooth device.

Solution: This can be resolved by downloading the latest version of the Bluetooth driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website. If, however, the driver does not fix the issue, you can right-click the Bluetooth device in Devices and Printers and launch the Bluetooth control panel from there.


N4110 / 14R

Inspiron N4110 / 14R systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron N4110 / 14R does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:


Problem: "Needs attention" appears in the compatibility report of ATI Control Center.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: AMD HD 6470 video card shows a yellow bang in Device Manager after upgrade to win8.

Solution: Be sure to update your video driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website before upgrading to Windows 8.


Problem: The Bluetooth control panel disappears after pairing with another Bluetooth device.

Solution: This can be resolved by downloading the latest version of the Bluetooth driver from the Dell Drivers and Downloads website. If, however, the driver does not fix the issue, you can right-click the Bluetooth device in Devices and Printers and launch the Bluetooth control panel from there.


M5110 / M511R

Inspiron M5110 / M511R systems have been tested for support of Windows 8 upgrade. The Inspiron M5110 / M511R does support upgrade to Windows 8, with the following open issues directly after upgrade:
