  • 1: Make Sure the Disc and Drive are Clean
and Check the Disc for Damage

These are the recommended procedures prior to calling Dell technical support for problems with a CD/DVD/BD optical disc drive not reading or writing to a disc.

    Clean the Disc
    • If a disc has a fingerprint, dust, or dirt on the surface, gently blow any large dust or dirt particles off first. Then use a damp, clean, lint-free, soft cloth and gently wipe the disc in a straight line from the inside center hole to the outside edge.
(Do not use any household cleaners, which can be too harsh and damage the disc.)

Test the CD/DVD/BD Optical Disc Drive
    With an Original Disc
    • Put in an original manufactured CD/DVD/BD that came with your Dell computer or software that was purchased from a retail store.
(A burned copy of a CD/DVD/BD may not work in another drive from which it was created.).
To determine of the computer is experiencing a hardware problem, you can run a diagnostic test on the Optical Drive.
