OptiPlex 7040 Micro Form Factor (MFF) Teardown removal guide for customer replaceable units (CRUs)



These guides will take you step by step through the safe removal of what are considered to be the Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) parts of a OptiPlex 7040 Micro Form Factor (MFF) system. (CRUs are the parts of the system that shouldn't need an engineer to remove or replace). The guides will also include pictures to reference what's involved.

2. Removal Instructions

Required Tools

1 Small Phillip's head screwdriver 2 Plastic Scribe
3 Small Flat head screwdriver

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Top Cover :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Loosen the locking screw. The locking screw usually needs to be unscrewed more than necessary.

  1. Slide the cover forward and remove it from the system. Press down the back part of the cover to apply some force if necessary, and slide the cover forward.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Hard Disk Drive :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the Top Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. (1) Press the two holding tabs and (2) slide the HDD forward.

  1. Lift up the HDD carrier.

  1. Peel the sides of the hard drive carrier away from the hard disk drive and remove the hard disk drive carrier.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Speaker and Fan :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the Top Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Press the two securing tabs and lift the fan shroud to the side.

  1. Disconnect the speaker and fan cable.

  1. Remove the speaker/fan shroud assembly.

  1. Remove the two screws securing the speaker.

  1. Remove the speaker.

  1. Remove the three screws securing the shroud to the fan.

  1. Remove the shroud.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Media I/O Board :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the Top Cover

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Disconnect the cable.

  1. Remove the two screws.

  1. Slide the Media I/O Board out and remove from the system.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the WLAN Card :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the Top Cover and Hard Disk Drive

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Remove one screw from the WLAN Holder.

  1. Remove the WLAN holder.

  1. Remove the two antennas.

  1. Slide the WLAN card out and remove it from the system.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Memory :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the Top Cover, Speaker and Fan (Just remove up to step 3)

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Push the two pins away from the memory.

  1. Slide the memory out from the system board.

  1. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the additional memory.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Heat Sink and Processor:

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the Top Cover, Speaker and Fan (Just remove up to step 3)

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Loosen the four captive screws from the heat sink.

  1. Remove the heat sink.

  1. Press the release lever down and aside to release it from the retention hook. Pull it backwards to lift the processor cover.

  1. Remove the processor.

  1. Complete.

  1. Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the CMOS Battery :

    1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

    2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

    3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

    4. Please remove the Top Cover, Hard Disk Drive and Media I/O Board

  2. Establishing image.

  1. Push the securing tab to unlock the CMOS battery.

  1. Remove the CMOS battery.

  1. Complete.
