This article provides information on how to start and run the Enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment (ePSA) Diagnostics, and the definitions of any test results. In other words, it takes you through your PC’s built-in diagnostics and what the error codes mean.
Dell has built a suite of self-diagnostics into their mobile and desktop PCs. These are the Dell Enhanced Pre-Boot System Assessment (ePSA) Diagnostics. If you can't boot your PC or complete POST, these self-diagnostics are the first thing you should try to run. Any error codes provided by these tests can go a long way toward troubleshooting your issue.
The PSA diagnostics have a text-based interface, while the ePSA (previously PSA+) diagnostics may have either a text-based interface or a Graphical User Interface (GUI).
The tests are very comprehensive. The ePSA suite of tests has all the tests included in the older PSA suite, as well as added support for:
You can then use the results to determine if any hardware failure has occurred or pinpoint any failure points.
Based on what happens, the information below will assist you in troubleshooting the fault and working toward a resolution to your system problems.
DST, PSA and ePSA diagnostics work on hard drives encrypted with Full Drive Encryption (FDE), without the need for a password. These diagnostics can also be performed on drives encrypted with Bitlocker.
While it is true that the data on an encrypted drive is inaccessible, the diagnostic can access areas on the hard drive to test and store results.
If you receive errors while running the DST, PSA or ePSA diagnostic tests, please visit our ePSA online tool. You can get more information on possible resolutions to your issue and even get a part dispatched if needed.
The pen can function at either the default calibration or at a custom-set calibration. It is recommended that you use the pen online while it is calibrated to your custom settings. Calibration optimizes pen performance for each user.
For 11G and newer systems:
For 10G and older systems:
If you can boot your PC into Windows and connect to the internet, you can also run the PSA diagnostics from the Dell Support Site.
For further information on running the online diagnostics, please refer to the article How to use the Dell Online Diagnostic Tool to troubleshoot your Dell PC.
Already have an error code from running the ePSA diagnostics?
If you have already run the ePSA diagnostics and noted the error and validation codes, then you can log a service call using the Enhanced Preboot System Assessment. You will need to enter the error and validation codes as seen on-screen, as well as the service tag of the faulty computer. Simply follow the prompts to complete the process.
Dell's Interactive Search Agent (English Only) can provide you with information regarding your specific error code, without having to search the table below.
You may need to provide information on what version of Diagnostics your computer has installed to get the correct results. To find out what version of diagnostics your computer has, look at the top of the screen. If it shows "Pre Boot System Assessment" select PSA or PSA+. If it shows "ePSA Pre Boot System Assessment", select ePSA.
