Alienware M11x Binary Graphics Overview



Article Summary: This article contains information about Alienware M11x Binary Graphics

The Alienware M11x incorporates support for Binary Graphics. The two binary Graphics modes are:

  • Increased Performance Mode (Discrete graphics mode)
  • Save Power Mode (Integrated graphics mode)

To toggle between the two graphics modes, press the <FN><F6> key combination, (Figure 1).

Increased Performance Mode, or discrete graphics mode is recommended when using AC power and for gaming. Increased Performance Mode is indicated by the icon in the system tray. See (Figure 2). Right-clicking on the icon in the system tray will launch the applet shown in (Figure 2) and will allow the user to switch between graphics modes.

Save Power Mode, or integrated graphics mode is recommended the computer is running on battery power or when running less intensive computing applications such as productivity software or web surfing. See (Figure 3). Right-clicking on the icon in the system tray will launch the applet shown in (Figure 3) and will allow the user to switch between graphics modes.

Alienware M11x Binary Graphics Troubleshooting


If unable to toggle between the two graphics modes, take to following steps:

Verify the Display Adapters are listed in the Device Manager

  1. Click in the lower left hand corner of the screen.
  2. Click Control Panel
  3. Click Hardware and Sound
  4. Under the Devices and Printers heading, click Device Manager
  5. In the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Display Adapters
  6. Under Display Adapters, you should see these two graphics devices listed (Figure 4).

Install or Reinstall the latest driver for the display adapters


  1. Browse to the Drivers and Downloads page
  2. Click Enter a Tag or Select a Model
  3. Enter the service tag or model information for the system
  4. Select the desired operating system, driver language, category, and importance settings from the drop-down boxes
  5. Select, download, and install the latest version of the video drivers for the display adapter listed in (Figure 4) above

If the problem persists after completing the above steps, do the following.

  1. Browse to the Drivers and Downloads page
  2. Click Enter a Tag or Select a Model
  3. Enter the service tag or model information for the system
  4. In the Category drop-down, choose BIOS
  5. Select, download, and install the latest version of the BIOS for the system
  6. After restarting the system, verify if the problem is resolved

If the problem remains unresolved after completing all of the above steps, contact Dell Support

  2. Under Who Do You Need to Contact?, click the icon or More Details link that appears next to Technical Support.

  3. Click one of the following options that appear under Contact Dell:
