1. How to remove the Hard Drive from a Dell laptop system

A user may report they need to remove the Hard Drive from their Dell Laptop system. The article will show how this is done

Pre-Removal Instructions Before removing the Hard Drive:

  • During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly
  • Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer
  • Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets
Each model may have slight differences in removal process and further instructions can be found within their user manuals.

2. Latitude Systems Hard Drive Removal

Depending on the model of Latitude system you have, there are slight differences in how the Hard Drive is removed.
(In the models listed below xx relates to the model range, e.g. E6500, E6510, E6520 & E6530)

For Latitude E63xx / E64xx / E65xx

  • Remove the two or four screws that secure the hard drive from the system.
  • Slide the hard drive out of the system & remove.



For Latitude E62xx / E54xx / E55xx
  • Remove the Battery and Bottom Door.
  • Remove the two or four screws that secure the hard drive and bracket in place.
  • Grasp the Mylar tab and gently pull it upward to release the hard drive from its compartment.




For Latitude E6420 XFR
  • Remove the battery.
  • Release the latch to open the HDD door.
  • Push the blue locking button (1) while at the same time, pull the HDD out of the system (2).


For Latitude XT2
  • Remove the battery from the system.
  • Loosen the four captive screws on the hard drive bracket.
  • Remove the hard drive bracket.
  • Slide the hard drive towards the edge of the system to disconnect from the system board.



For Latitude XT3
  • Remove the battery and bottom door.
  • Remove the two screws securing the hard drive in place.
  • Pull the hard drive out from the system.

If, after replacing the Hard Drive, you receive a "No Hard Drive Detected" error, please refer to article SLN142653 for details on how to resolve this.

3. Precision Systems Hard Drive Removal

The steps detailed below are used to remove the Hard Drive on all Precision Laptop systems.

  • Remove the battery.
  • Remove the two screws securing the bottom door in place & remove.
  • Remove the five screws securing the primary hard drive bracket in place.
  • Slide the battery release latch into the unlock position.
  • Remove the hard drive bracket from the system.

Each model may have slight differences in removal process and further instructions can be found within their user manuals.

4. Inspiron Systems Hard Drive Removal

The steps detailed below are used to remove the Hard Drive on all Inspiron Laptop systems.

  • Remove the battery from the system.
  • Remove the two screws that secure the bottom back door to the computer base.
  • Remove the bottom back door.
  • Remove the screws securing the hard-drive on the Bottom base.
  • Slide the hard drive assembly away from the hard drive connector.
  • Pull the tab to lift and remove the hard drive assembly out of the system.
