Create a Complete PC Backup Using Vista Backup

Note:

To use the Complete PC Backup function of Windows Vista Backup, the system must have one of the following:

  • A second hard drive
  • An unused second partition on the existing hard drive
  • A writeable DVD drive (DVD+/-RW)

To begin using Windows Vista Backup to protect important files, perform the steps below.

  1. Click the .


  2. Click All Programs.


  3. Click Accessories.


  4. Click System Tools.


  5. Click Backup Status and Configuration.


  6. Click Complete PC Backup


  7. Click Create a backup now.


  8. If the User Account Control window appears, click
    Continue
    .


  9. Choose the desired backup location type, either On a hard disk or On one or more DVDs.


  10. Select the desired location from the dropdown below the location type.


  11. Click
    Next
    .

  12. Confirm the desired backup settings, then click
    Start backup
    .

  13. Windows Complete PC Backup prepares and creates a backup image of the entire computer and stores it at the location selected. The process can take from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the hard drive and the number of applications installed. If On one or more DVDs was selected, the system may prompt for additional blank DVD disks to finish backing up the system.

    If backing up to DVD, label and store the DVD(s) in a safe location.


  14. When the backup is complete, click
    Close
    and close the Backup Status and Configuration window
