Why is the parallel port not recognized on my Dell portable computer? - Technical Tip - 164344




Boot the computer without the external floppy drive cable connected to the parallel port.

The system must be booted without the external floppy drive cable connected to the parallel port. To do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Disconnect the floppy drive cable from the parallel port on the system.
  2. Reboot the system.
    The operating system will detect the parallel port.
  3. Click the Start button, click Shut Down, click Shut down, and click OK.
  4. Reconnect the floppy drive cable to the parallel port on the system.
  5. Reboot the system.

If the operating system does still not recognize the parallel port, further troubleshooting of the parallel port is required.



The parallel port may not be recognized on a Dell™ portable computer.

Either of the following problems may occur:

  • The parallel port is not detected by the operating system and is not displayed as an item in Device Manager.

    NOTE:
    To open the Windows 95 or 98 Device Manager, perform the following steps:

    1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
      The Control Panel window should appear.
    2. Double-click the System icon.
      The System Properties window should appear.
    3. Click the Device Manager tab.
    4. Make sure that View Devices by Type is selected.

  • If the parallel port is deleted from Device Manager, the operating system does not redetect it when the system is rebooted.
