Determining Which Video Card You Have

  1. Login as root and press <Enter>.
  2. At the command line prompt, type
    more proc/pci and press <Enter> to display a list of system devices.
    Look for video card information to confirm that you are using the Diamond AGP graphic adapter.



Reinstalling XFree86 With Red Hat Linux on a Running System from CD

  1. Place the Red Hat Linux 6.0 CD in the CD drive.
  2. Login as root and press <Enter>.
  3. At the command line prompt, type
    mount /mnt/cdrom and press <Enter>.
  4. Type
    rpm -i /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/XFree86-3DLabs*rpm and press <Enter>.
  5. Follow the instructions in the next section Running Xconfigurator During Red Hat 6.0 Installation.



Running Xconfigurator During Red Hat 6.0 Installation

Xconfigurator runs automatically during installation. After Xconfigurator runs and detects your card, perform the following steps:

  1. Click OK when the following message appears.

    PCI probing found a:
    PCI Entry: TVP4020 Permedia 2
    X Server : 3Dlabs


    NOTE: If Xconfigurator displays a different message, you may have an add-on video adapter or a different model of Dell computer. Refer to the section Determining Which Video Card You Have.

  2. Select your monitor from the list and proceed to step 3.
    If your monitor is not listed, click Custom.
  3. Click OK, and then click the setting that most closely matches your monitor.

    NOTE: HighFrequency SVGA, 1024x768@70Hz works for most modern 15-inch monitors. Most 17-inch and larger monitors can support 1280x1024 @ 74Hz. Consult the documentation that accompanied your monitor.

  4. If you chose a custom monitor setting, select the vertical sync range for your monitor.

    NOTE: 50-70 works for most modern 15-inch monitors; 50-90 works for most 17-inch and larger monitors.

  5. Click NoProbe to skip probing memory and clock timings.
    The Video Memory menu appears.
  6. Click 8 mb or more.
    The Clock Chip Configuration menu appears.
  7. Click No Clockchip Setting.
    The Probe on the Clocks menu appears.
  8. Click Skip.
  9. Click the bit depth (number of colors) and resolution you want to use.

    NOTE: The recommended bit depth is 24 bit. The recommended resolution for 15-inch and 17-inch monitors is 1024 x 768 resolution. The recommended resolution for 19-inch and 21-inch monitors is 1280 x 1024.

  10. Click OK to test the configuration.
  11. Click Yes.
  12. If you want to have XFree86 startup during the boot routine, click Yes.
    If you want to log in on the console, click No.
  13. Click OK to acknowledge completion of Xconfiguration.
