Why is the Print Quality of My Dell A940 All-In-One Printer Poor? - Technical Tip - 129985

Cleaning and Maintenance

  1. Click the Start button, point toAll Programs, then Dell Printers, then Dell AIO A940, then click Dell Printer Solution Center to open the Control Program for the A940.
The Dell Printer Solution Center - Dell AIO A940 Printer window appears.

  2. Click the Maintenance button and select Clean to fix horizontal streaks.
The Maintenance button is the third of five with liquid droplets on it.

  3. Click Print.

NOTE

NOTE:The print example and the actual test image may be different. This is a normal, cosmetic issue and does not indicate a print quality issue.

  1. Examine the test pattern.
If the printed bars of the printout are faded on either side of the page or you find them to be shorter, then the cartridge is running low on that particular color ink.

NOTE NOTE:

To access the Software & Peripherals online page and order replacement ink cartridges, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article:

  1. Print your document again to verify your print quality. If print quality does not improve, remove and reinstall the print cartridge.

  2. Repeat the Clean to fix horizontal streaks action in step 2.

  3. If print quality is still unacceptable, go to the Cleaning the Maintenance Station section.

Cleaning the Maintenance Station

Poor print quality could be the result of the cartridge carrier picking up ink from the wiper in the maintenance station, so you may need to clean the maintenance station. The maintenance station is located on the far right hand side of the printer. Your ink cartridge(s) reside in the maintenance station when they are not in use.

NOTE

NOTE:The cover does not need to be removed to access the maintenance station.

  1. To access the wiper for cleaning, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.

  2. Manually move the ink-cartridge carrier to the left by gripping the top of the rubber carrier belt and gently pulling it across towards the right hand side of the printer.

  3. Take a warm, damp paper towel and gently clean the wiper on the right side of the maintenance station.

Inks and Print Media

Because all paper varies in physical characteristics, you can receive mixed results from different packages of paper even though the packages contain the same type of paper. If you encounter undesirable results, try the other side of the paper, a different type of paper, or another package of the same kind of paper. Most papers have a preferred print side indicated on the paper package. Load the paper so that the preferred print side faces you.

Do not use the following types of paper with the printer:

  • Erasable bond paper

  • Synthetic paper

  • Thermal paper

  • Multi-sheet forms and documents

  • Chemically treated paper (carbonless paper)

Papers printed with a printing process using chemicals will contaminate the paper feed mechanism components (paper with raised, embossed lettering).

Dell does not recommend the use of third party inks or inkjet cartridge refill kits. Genuine Dell inks and cartridges are perfectly matched to the printing system. Using genuine Dell ink and cartridges ensures that every document produced is of the highest possible print quality, providing long-term dependable service from your Dell printer. Dell cannot assure the excellent print quality and reliability of its inkjet cartridges after a cartridge has been refilled. Using incompatible inks in an attempt to extend the life of a genuine Dell cartridge beyond its recommended usage can cause failures in several different areas of the printer. Inkjet cartridge and printer failures caused by refilling or a third party ink is not covered by your Dell printer warranty, extended warranty or service.
