How to Troubleshoot Print Quality Issues on the E525w Dell Color Multifunction Printer

1. Print Quality Issues on the E525w Dell Laser Printers

If you have a print quality problem, print a test page first. If the printout looks good, the problem is probably not the machine. Check the interface cable connections and try printing a different document. If the printout or test page printed from the machine has a quality problem, check the examples of poor print quality in the table and follow the recommendations.

Note: Using non-Dell supplies may affect the print quality, hardware performance, and machine reliability.
  1. To get the best print quality, we suggest using recommended print media. Make sure you use paper that meets our specifications.
  2. Check that the toner cartridge is installed correctly.

2. The Output is Too Light


  1. If you use non-Dell brand toner cartridges, install Dell brand toner cartridges.
  2. The toner cartridges may be low or need to be replaced.
    1. Check if the LCD panel on the operator panel shows the message prompting you to replace a toner cartridge.
    2. Replace the toner cartridges as necessary.
  3. Verify that the print media is not damp and the correct print media is used. See "Supported Paper Types". If not, use the print media recommended for the printer.
  4. Verify that the Paper Type setting in the printer driver matches the print media you loaded.
    1. On the General or Paper/Output tab in Printing Preferences of the printer driver, check the Paper Type setting.
    2. Load dry (not damp) and corrected print media, and then click Print Test Page in Printer properties of the printer driver.
  5. Disable the Toner Saving Mode in the printer driver.
    1. On the Graphics tab in Printing Preferences of the printer driver, ensure that the Toner Saving Mode check box is not selected.

3. Toner Smears or Print Comes Off


  1. The print media surface may be uneven. Try changing the Paper Type setting in the printer driver. For example, change the plain paper to thick.
    1. On the General or Paper/Output tab in Printing Preferences of the printer driver, change the Paper Type setting.
  2. Verify that the print media is not damp and the correct print media is used. See "Supported Paper Types". If not, use the print media recommended for the printer.
  3. Adjust the fusing unit temperature.
    1. Launch the Tool Box, and click Adjust Fusing Unit on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Adjust the fixing temperature by turning up the value for your printing media.
    3. Click Apply New Settings.

4. Random Spots / Blurred Images


  1. Ensure that the toner cartridges are installed correctly. See "Installing a Toner Cartridge".
  2. If you use non-Dell brand toner cartridges, install Dell brand toner cartridges.
  3. Clean up the fusing unit.
    1. Load one sheet of paper in the standard 150 sheet tray, and then print a solid image all over paper.
    2. Load the printed sheet with the side to be printed on facing down, and then print a blank sheet of paper.

8. Vertical Blanks


  1. Clean inside the printer and performing test print.
    1. Clean inside the printer by using the cleaning rod. See "Cleaning Inside the Printer".
    2. Click Print Test Page in Printer properties of the printer driver.

9. Mottle


  1. Adjust the transfer bias.
    1. Launch the Tool Box, click Adjust Transfer Roller on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Adjust the setting for the type of print media being used.
  2. If you use non-recommended print media, use the print media recommended for the printer.

10. Ghosting


  1. Adjust the transfer bias.
    1. Launch the Tool Box, and click Registration Adjustment on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Click Chart Print.
    3. Click Ghost Configuration Chart.
      The ghost configuration chart is printed.
    4. Click Adjust Transfer Roller.
    5. Select the Transfer Roller Refresh Mode check box, and then click Apply New Settings.
    6. Click Registration Adjustment on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    7. Click Chart Print.
    8. Click Ghost Configuration Chart.
    The ghost configuration chart is printed.
  2. The print media surface may be uneven. Try changing the Paper Type setting in the printer driver. For example, change the plain paper to thick.

11. Fog


  1. Is the whole page printed light? Please contact Dell Technical Support.
  2. Start Clean Developer.
    1. Launch the Tool Box, and click Clean Developer on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Click Start.
  3. Start Toner Refresh Mode.
    1. Launch the Tool Box, and click Toner Refresh Mode on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Select the color that is the same as the fog.
  4. Start Toner Refresh Mode again.

12. Bead-Carry-Out (BCO)


  1. If the printer is installed in a high altitude location, set the altitude of the location.
    1. Launch the Tool Box, and click Environmental Sensor Info on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Click Adjust Altitude.
    3. Select the value close to the altitude of the location where the printer is installed.

13. Auger Mark

14. Wrinkled/Stained Paper


  1. Remove the stack of paper from the standard 150 sheet tray, rotate it 180 degrees, and then reload it in the tray.
  2. Verify that the correct print media is being used. See "Supported Paper Types" and "Print Media Guidelines". If not, use the print media recommended for the printer.
  3. Check the crease. Is the crease within 30 mm of the four edges of the envelope?
  4. Does the envelope have a flap on the long edge?
    1. Ensure that the envelope is properly loaded in the standard 150 sheet tray.
  5. Ensure that the envelope is properly loaded in the standard 150 sheet tray.
    1. Use a different size envelope.

15. The Top Margins are Incorrect

16. Color Registration is Out of Alignment


  1. Execute auto color registration adjustment.
    1. Launch the Tool Box, and click Registration Adjustment on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Clear the On check box for Auto Registration Adjustment.
    3. Click Start next to Auto Correct.
  2. Clean the CTD sensor.
    1. Clean the CTD sensor. See "Cleaning the Color Toner Density (CTD) Sensor".
    2. Launch the Tool Box, and click Registration Adjustment on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    3. Clear the On check box for Auto Registration Adjustment.
    4. Click Start next to Auto Correct.
  3. Print the color registration chart and manually correct the color registration.
    1. Click Registration Adjustment on the Printer Maintenance tab.
    2. Clear the On check box for Auto Registration Adjustment.
    3. Click Start next to Print Color Regi Chart.
      The color registration chart is printed.
    4. Select the value with the straight line. See "Adjusting Color Registration".
    5. Click Apply New Settings.
    6. Click Start next to Print Color Regi Chart to print the color registration chart again.
    7. Adjust the values for every color until the lines at 0 are the straightest.

17. Protrudent/Bumpy Paper


  1. Clean up the fusing unit.
    1. Load one sheet of paper in the standard 150 sheet tray, and then print a solid image all over paper.
    2. Load the printed sheet with the side to be printed on facing down, and then print a blank sheet of paper.
