How to install Ubuntu on PowerEdge Cloud C6220/C6220 II/C8220

Issue:

Unable to load Operating System due to the inability to locate a storage device in Issue.

Note: Concerning the C8220, the hardware is not on the HCL from Dell, but Ubuntu validates the installation using an additional RAID controller (http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201209-11815/).

Solution:

  1. Install OS using Ubuntu 12.04.1 Server (AMD64 version) or later.
  2. Configure a RAID 1 array on the Intel C600 controller
  3. During installation, the installer will detect the RAID array and ask if you want to activate the SATA RAID devices. Choose "Yes".
  4. The SATA RAID array will show up as "/dev/mapper/isw_<something>_Volume0". the <something> will vary from system to system. Write down the volume information and save for later.
  5. Let the system auto-partition the RAID device.
  6. Format.
  7. Continue the install.
  8. Near the end of the installation, it will ask where to install grub to. The installer will just show "/dev/mapper". Do not install to just "/dev/mapper" or else it will fail. Instead, point the installer to "/dev/mapper/isw_<something>_Volume0".
  9. From here, grub should install to the correct location and the system should boot.
Note: The user should ensure that the RAID has actually been configured. Just setting the SATA to RAID in the F2 BIOS menu isn't enough. The user will also have to go to the C600 Option ROM (CTRL+I) during POST to create the RAID 1 volume.
