How to Install in command line the OMSA VIB plugin on PowerEdge Server running VMware ESXi 5.x or 6.x?


This article provides the download information to enable you to install OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) on your PowerEdge Server running VMware ESXi5.0.


Note: The graphical installation of the VIB is covered in article HOW10613.



There are two parts to the OMSA installation on an ESXi host:

  • A vSphere Installation Bundle (VIB) that is installed on the host
  • A Managed Node that is installed on a Windows system, to access the information from the VIB on the ESXi host A reboot will be required to complete the installation of the VIB on the ESXi host.

To install OMSA VIB on ESXi 5.0 or 6.0, perform the following steps:

  1. Download latest version of OMSA from the System Management section on the Dell Downloads Site. Please enter your service Tag or select your model, and then access the Drivers and Download section.
  2. Verify there is no version of OMSA currently running on VMware host (Figure 1 (English-only)).

    esxcli software vib list |grep OpenManage

  3. Using WinSCP or similar method, copy the VIB offline bundle to /var/log/vmware (Figure 2 (English-only)).

  4. Install VIB using following command (Figure 3 (English-only)):

    esxcli software vib install -d OM-SrvAdmin-Dell-Web-7.2.0-6870.VIB-ESX50i.zip --no-sig-check

  5. Reboot the host
  6. Verify OMSA VIB installed successfully (Figure 4 (English-only)).

    esxcli software vib list |grep OpenManage

Once the VIB is successfully installed, you should be able to access it from a remote OpenManage Server Adminitrator installation or directly from OpenManage Essentials.
