How to make the most of 'Special Characters'

1. What are special characters

Special characters are characters that are not present on your keyboard layout. They can be used by either pressing a combination of keys on the keyboard or utilizing the Character Map within Windows.

2. How do I open the Character Map?

The Character Map can be used to search for characters that are available in selected fonts. You can then copy the selected character(s) and paste them in a desired location / file.

To open the Character Map: (Windows 7)

  1. Click Start button

  2. Click on All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

  3. then click Character Map (Figure 1)

To open the Character Map: (Windows 8/8.1)

  1. Type Character Map and select the app from the resulting app results.

  2. Or from the Metro screen move to the top right corner and type Character Map in the search field. (Figure 1)

To open the Character Map: (Windows 10)

  1. In the Cortana search box type Character Map and select from the results. (Figure 1)

3. Alt - Keypress Options

You also have the option of using keypress codes to display special characters. By holding down the Alt key and pressing a combination of numbers you can display characters without using software tools like the Character Map etc.

Note: Make sure that you switch ON the Number Lock on your keyboard and use the Number Pad section of keys.

Number Pad

Note: For Notebooks / Laptops turning on the Num Lock will activate the number pad option of your integrated keyboard. These keys will have the numbers in different colors below the letters or symbols. To activate the number pad keys on some models you may need to turn the Numlock on by pressing the Fn+F2 combination.
