How do I flash (recover) the BIOS on the Dell™ PowerEdge™ 8450? - Technical Tip - 131672

Flash (recover) the BIOS on the 8450

To flash (recover) the BIOS on the PowerEdge 8450, perform the following steps:

  1. Power the system down.
  2. Remove the system cover so you can see the PCI slots and the 8-position dipswitch (SW4G1) (See Figure 1.)

NOTE: For more information on removing and replacing the computer cover, refer to the appropriate User's Guide.

  3. Move the BIOS recovery switch #2 to the On or Closed position (Figure 2).

Figure 2 - Recovery switch in the "On" or "Closed" position

  4. Download the latest FlashBIOS Update file from the Dell Support site, and follow the onscreen instructions to create the BIOS recovery diskette.

NOTE: For more information on searching and downloading drivers, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article "How to Obtain Downloadable Drivers, Files, and Utilities for a Dell™ Computer" Article ID: 167409.

  5. Insert the diskette into the system.
  6. Power the system on.

NOTE: The recovery BIOS will boot the system from the diskette and re-flash the system BIOS without LCD or video display. This procedure begins with a single beep. When the recovery of the system BIOS completes, two beeps sound. Next, the procedure recovers user binary code, concluding with two more beeps if the recovery is successful. If the recovery procedure fails, a continuous series of beeps is emitted. The entire process can take up to five minutes.

CAUTION

CAUTION: Do not interrupt the recovery; doing so could cause damage to the profusion chip set and SCSI backplane.

  1. After the flash/recovery is complete, power the system off.
  2. Remove the flash diskette.
  3. Restore the #2 dipswitch to the original position.
  4. Put the computer cover back on.
  5. Turn the system power on for normal operation.
  6. Flash the latest version of firmware, if necessary.

NOTE: For more information on flashing the BIOS on the PowerEdge 8450, refer to the User's Guide.
