Can not send a Fax from a 1815dn printer


  1. Verify the type of fax problem that is occurring with the error on the list.

  2. Verify the phone line is working.

  3. Verify there is a dial tone on the fax line.

  4. Verify the Fax/Phone Terminator Plug is connected to the telephone jack.

  5. Verify the faxing procedure is being performed correctly.
    1. Either load the document(s) face up with the top edge in first into the ADF, or place a single document face down on the document glass.
    2. Press the or to highlight Fax and press the button.
    3. Enter the remote fax phone number using the number keypad.
    4. Press the Start button.

  6. Verify the phone cable is plugged into the proper jack.

  7. Check the Dial Mode.
    1. While the printer is on, press the Left Arrow, #, 1, 9, 3, and 4 in succession on the operator panel.
    2. Press the button to enter "TECH MODE [Tech Menu]".
    3. Press the button to enter "Data Setup".
    4. Press the button to enter "Send Level".
    5. Press the Right Arrow until the LCD displays "Dial Mode" and press the button.
    6. Press the Right Arrow to scroll to either "Tone" or "Pulse" and select the correct one based on your phone link type.

  8. Use a telephone cable no longer than 6 feet that does not include splitters.

  9. Disconnect all other devices from the phone line and fax printer.

  10. Swap with a known-good phone cord. If the known-good cord resolves the issue, replace the cord.

  11. Cancel any scheduled faxes.
    1. Press the or button to highlight Fax, then press the button.
    2. Press the or button to highlight Fax Features, then press the button.
    3. Press the or button to highlight Cancel Job, then press the button to display the fax jobs reserved in memory.
    4. Press the or button to highlight the job you want, then press the button.
    5. When the confirming message appears, press the button to cancel the selected job.

  12. Set the dialling prefix using the operator panel.
    1. Press the or button to highlight Menu, then press the button.
    2. Press the or button to highlight Advanced Fax, then press the button.
    3. Press the or button to highlight Prefix Dial, then press the button.
    4. Enter the desired prefix number, then press the button.
    5. Press the Cancel button to exit.

  13. Lower the fax baud rate.
    1. Press the or button to highlight Menu, then press the button.
    2. Press the or button to highlight Advanced Fax, then press the button.
    3. Press the or button to highlight Modem Speed, then press the button.
    4. Press the or button to highlight 9.6 or 4.8, then press the button.
    5. Press the Cancel button to exit.

  14. Disable Error Correction Mode (ECM):
    1. Press the or button to highlight Menu, then press the button.
    2. Press the or button to highlight Advanced Fax, then press the button.
    3. Press the or button to highlight ECM Mode, then press the button.
    4. Press the or button to highlight Off, then press the button.
    5. Press the Cancel button to exit.

  15. Attempt to send a fax, and listen for fax tones.
    • No transmission signal sound is heard:
      1. Contact Technical Support.
    • A transmission signal sound is heard:
      1. Send the fax manually.
        1. Either load the document(s) face up with the top edge in first into the ADF, or place a single document face down on the document glass.
        2. Press the or button to highlight Fax, then press the button.
        3. Press the or button to highlight On Hook Dial, then press the button.
        4. Press the button to select Yes.
        5. Enter the number of the remote fax machine using the keypad.
        6. Press the Start button.

      2. Determine the message displayed:
        • LINE ERROR
          1. Verify the Phone Line is Working. If the phone line does not have a dial tone, contact your telephone company.
          2. Otherwise Contact Technical Support.

        • OK
          1. The fax transmission has completed successfully.

        • LINE BUSY
          1. Verify the printer is working by sending a Fax to another number. If it works properly, the problem is with the Fax machine your trying to dial.
          2. Otherwise Contact Technical Support.
        • NO ANSWER
          1. Verify the printer is working by sending a Fax to another number. If it works properly, the problem is with the Fax machine your trying to dial.
          2. Otherwise Contact Technical Support.
