Windows Server: How to Enable or Disable a Network Adapter in Windows Server Core

Article Summary: This article provides information on enabling and disabling network adapters in a Server Core (non-GUI) installation of Windows Server

Since Windows Server Core does not include a graphical user interface (GUI), the Network Connections applet is not available for managing network adapters. Instead, netsh commands are used. These commands can also be used in a full (GUI-enabled) installation of Windows Server; they are not restricted to Windows Server Core.

To enumerate the adapters detected by Windows, run the following command:

netsh int show int

Note the Interface Name of the adapter you wish to manage. To enable an adapter named Local Area Connection, run the following command:

netsh int set int name="Local Area Connection" admin=enabled

There will be no output for this command. You may run netsh int show int again to verify that the adapter is now enabled.

To disable an adapter, simply substitute disabled for enabled in the previous command.
