Why can I not upgrade Small Business Server 4.5 in a 2 GB Partition? - Technical Tip - 164585


Delete the Clients directory to Upgrade Small Business Server 4.5 in a 2 GB Partition.

  1. Start Windows NT® Explorer and expand the SmallBusiness directory.
  2. Right-click the Clients shared folder and choose Sharing.
  3. Click Not Shared and OK.
  4. Then right-click the Clients directory and choose Delete. This will free up approximately 400 MB, which is frequently enough space to allow the upgrade.



During the Small Business Server 4.5 install, redirect the Clients folder to another drive.

  1. During the install, redirect the Clients folder to another drive.
  2. Changing the drive location of a component is not intuitive. When you click on Change Folder during the install, the directory C:\ClientApps shows on the top line.
  3. Your impulse may be to change the drive letter here. That does not work. You must click on the list of drives below. For example, select D: and then D:\ appears as the directory.
  4. You then must type ClientApps after D:\.



There is not enough disk space to do the upgrade.

Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 cannot upgrade over the factory install of SBS in a 2 GB partition. There is not enough space.
